If diamonds are a girl's best friend, then Elizabeth Taylor certainly had no shortage of chums. This week her legendary jewellery collection went on sale and, in true legend style, records were broken. Speaking of breaking records, world famous androgynous male model Andrej Pejic has been hired to model push-up bras! Yes, an unnaturally thin man with nothing more than nipples is modelling push-up bras for ladies! This week's fashion highlights are filled with dreams and delusions. Read More »

The Adequately Frugal Christmas Gift Guide!

Two weeks ago I made some simple suggestions for what gifts the fashion clueless can give to fashion lovers. Well, not to be outdone, Vogue USA has gone ahead and released a gift buying guide thoughtfully entitled 'The Perfectly Extravagant Holiday Gift Guide'. Chances are you haven't even seen it - as I said the guide is available to US audiences only (although you can check it out online for a laugh!) Notably, 'The Perfectly Extravagant Holiday Gift Guide' ignores the fact that, except for China and India and maybe Germany, the whole world is in an economic recession and extravagance is not the order of the season. Still, there are some really, really nice items in the guide so I thought I'd try and find you something similar for much less money! Read More »

Busy crossing names off your gift giving list? Good for you! After all, this is the season of giving. Of course, that also means that someone out there is planning on giving to you as well. Hopefully your loved ones know you well enough that you can avoid those awkward moments of disappointment when you open a gift that is just sort of wrong. Yet, we all have that one particular person who, no matter how well intentioned, always gets it wrong. To help avoid those long pauses wrapped in frozen smiles as you search for a polite way to say thank you, here is a helpful gift list for the beauty and fashion lover to share with the blissfully clueless. Fun & Frightening Fantasies from Overseas

The U.S. did a bang up job in the world of excess and bizarre fashion this week. We all know how they like things big over there and I'm sure you have questioned their taste level, as have I! Well this week two separate yet equally American news quips floated our way. I love and loathe these little factoids so much that I'm dedicating my entire blog to our cousins across the sea!

Sometimes I don't know who loves the Royal Family more - the Americans or the Brits. While there remains an ongoing fascination with the life story of Diana, it seems that our pretty new princess is stealing her place. Not only is Kate as much a topic of discussion in the trades there as she is here but this week I do believe they have managed to trump our tacky tea cups with the creepiest fashion dolls ever. Jackets Trending This Winter

What are we wearing to keep us warm this winter? After last year's solid dousing of the heavy white stuff I'm ready to commit to wrapping myself in blankets and parkas if need be! Thankfully, designers took note of those hazardous blizzards and added length and volume to jackets this season. After all, no-one is immune from mother nature. Continuing on the fedora trend, hats are being shaped and dyed to match those ankle length hems. Read More »

Is it On, Or Is it Gone?

There was a thing I heard as a child about fashion and time. It was something to the effect that fashion from London takes about 8 years to make it over to America. Having spent many a holiday across the pond, I can tell you there used to be truth in that statement. Yet when I speak to friends in Los Angeles and New York these days, a change in the time line has occurred. There is still a difference but it's more subtle and goes both ways. Sometimes we set the trends and sometimes the new world leads the way. While we spent last year matching brogues and aviator jackets, those items are just now appearing in shop windows in the US. Is timing still everything? Read More »

Glamour Goes Affordable

As I am sure you are aware, the Versace collection for H&M has been revealed. This long-awaited marriage of couture and the High Street was greeted with loving approval by fashion's media elite, a usually fickle crowd who delight in the fall as much as the rise to grace. Maybe it is the enduring love for the house of Versace or the fact that these mass produced dresses are actually high fashion but every review I've read has been overwhelmingly approving of the line. As I am certainly not in the media elite circle, I can unbiasedly tell you the truth about this "purse-friendly" endeavour. It is gorgeous! While the collection is primarily focused on partywear, there are some nice jackets and separates to mix in with daily wear. Donatella was even generous enough to include jewellery and accessories into the budget friendly line. Read More »

Fingernails are an important part of any outfit. They are a small detail that, when done well, blend in perfectly with any look you wish to portray. Ignore them, though and you inadvertently draw attention to those ragged little nails and, as we all know, it's the little things that make all the difference! This is a great time to play with display of your hands; colour, patterns and classic designs are very popular. For your fingers it's anything goes! Read More »

Must Have Pieces for Retro Trends

Fashion's continued adoration of the 60s and 70s ready-to-wear is in full swing for this winter season. Career ladies and stay-at-home mums alike will find outfits of glamour and ease that can be worn on a daily basis. Long skirts and palazzo trousers offer warmth and comfort without compromising on feminine charm.  While the single piece jumpsuit continues its Chameleon-like journey through day and nightwear, plaid is back, matched again with camel coats for a touch of scholarly fancy. London Fashion Week Thoughts

London Fashion Week came and went. Designers ignored the upcoming 2012 Olympics. Pippa Middleton wore a darling fashion mistake. We are all dressing for High Street next Summer and London is feeling comfortable as a fashion capital again.

Let's start with sweet little Pippa, shall we? Pippa Middleton has become quite the media darling since arriving fresh faced and tight bummed to her sister's wedding back in April. She showed up at the Temperley show wearing a respectable and gorgeous black and gold silk dress which she had purchased just that afternoon. I'm guessing, however, that she didn't take the time to properly test her dress before settling in to the front row with Rosario Dawson, Peaches Geldof and model Laura Bailey.

Fashion Week has ended in New York, signalling the start of our very own fabric and flesh parade right here. Starting tomorrow London will be the centre for all the latest stitches, fabrics, hairstyles and new shoes for the Spring/Summer 2012 season. Meanwhile, here at home, our new Duchess of Cambridge is already feeling the scorn of the fashion rags' fickle fancy. Read More »
