Boden's Best Buys: How To Get A Good Deal

Times are tough. Just about everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment so finding some spare cash to splash on clothing can be tough. However, with a bit of smart shopping, you can update your wardrobe for less than you might initially think.

So, with that in mind, here are my top tips for getting a good deal on great clothing:

Raid the sales: nearly all of the big retailers have end-of-season sales where they try to get rid of last season's clothes at rock bottom prices. You will have to get in there early though as if you're too late you will end up with rows and rows of empty racks instead. Camping out overnight is a little extreme though...

Use voucher codes: there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of voucher codes on the internet so why pay full price when you can cut the cost just by entering a string of letters and numbers at the checkout?

Save on shipping: this follows on from my last point in a way, as shopping online often incurs a postage and packaging charge. However, internet shopping is also the best way to find the most attractive deals. It's a tricky one but if you're able to find free shipping codes online, you can have the best of both worlds.

Women's clothing

Look Good For Less This Summer with Dorothy Perkins

Can you believe it's already the middle of April? We've had weeks of freezing temperatures, snow and rain! Where is this early summer sunshine we've been promised? It's definitely not here yet.

The miserable weather may mean that very few of us have even given summer a second thought but knowing what the British weather is like, it's always best to be prepared.

I know, I know. It's hard to even get into the summer spirit but, after designing your ideal wardrobe without breaking the bank, I'm confident you'll be excited about the sunshine.

Dresses

Every woman's wardrobe should have a few dresses for special occasions, especially through the warmer months. Luckily, Dorothy Perkins has 20% off selected dress at the moment so I've taken it upon myself to handpick a few of my favourites.

Minnie Mouse Gets Makeover to Celebrate 20 Years of Disneyland Paris

There are a lot of rules surrounding fashion, none more so as when you hit first middle age (watch out for those skirt lengths) and then head into the more mature years of life (plunging necklines a definite no-no.) So it seems that, at the ripe old age of 85, it's about time Minnie Mouse herself let go of the hair bows and bright polka dot frocks and embraced a style more befitting her age.

Step forward designer Alber Elbaz for Lanvin and Minnie's first ever designer outfit.

The oversized polka dot bow in her hair has been replaced with a glittering red tiara while her equally famous red and white dotty dress has disappeared leaving way for a royal blue creation with shoulder pads, long sleeves and ornate jewels.

The designer outfit was unveiled at a fashion show held at Disneyland Paris at the weekend as part of its 20th birthday celebrations.

After the show, designer Elbaz said, "It was a great challenge and responsibility to do. I just wanted her to shine... I wanted to give her a crown in red and the dress in blue, (a signature) for Lanvin."

While the dress is certainly fitting for Disney's matriarch, I think most of us still think of red and white polka dots when we think of Minnie Mouse. Perhaps as it should be considering Walt Disney himself designed that now iconic look.Add a Comment

Bella Thorne is Disney Princess at BooHoo.Com Summer 2013 Preview

Online fashion retailer, BooHoo.com, launched a Tea Party in Hollywood to celebrate their Summer 2013 Collection Preview and Disney's very own Bella Thorne was there to host - at the tender age of just 15.

The UK company based out of Manchester, has become one of the most popular online fashion shops since its launch in 2006, providing shoppers with 'hot-off-the-catwalk' fashion at High Street prices.

The glamorous teenage actress, who shot to stardom in Disney's Shake It Up, looked very grown up in a striking turquoise skater dress which is part of the BooHoo.com new collection.

Whilst there have been some questions about the age-appropriateness of the style, with its fitted bodice, cutout midriff and flared - albeit short - skirt, it seemed a perfect choice for the warm LA weather, a far cry from the bitterly cold snap that's currently got the UK in its grasp.

Although held in the glamour capital of the world, BooHoo.com paid tribute to its English roots with cupcakes decorated with Union Jack and fellow teen stars, Jade Ramsey and Tasie Lawrence for British teen show, House of Anubis.

The World's Biggest Fashion Faux Pas Revealed!

For many of us, life is spent moving from one fashion faux pas to another, from tie-dye t-shirts to over-sized dungarees and everything inbetween. While we may have had a sneaking suspicion at the time that our experimental looks were more fad then fab, we stubbornly forged ahead with our desire to be part of the fashion in-crowd, no matter the price to our reputations.

Like a flock of magpies always in search of something shiny and new, we flew wherever the next gust of wind in the world of fashion and accessories took us and, once we had reached our destination, we were more than a little bemused as to how we got there.

And so, almost unwittingly, we have watched as a vast array of fashion no-nos have crept into our wardrobes and our style over the years. And a knack of being seduced by the latest quirky offerings from the high street means that this habit seemingly has no end in sight.

Just last weekend I found myself drawn to a peacock print pencil skirt and, while I have nothing in shades of green, purple or blue to accompany it, I still can't help feeling that it would be the perfect addition to my sparse wardrobe.

A recent survey of over 1,000 women revealed that fashion faux pas are a phenomena experienced the world over with low trousers/visible pants on men topping the ranking of worst fashion trends of the 21st Century.

The fact that teen heartthrob Justin Bieber was recently spied sporting this very look after performing in Birmingham last month, proves that even A-listers can - and do - sometimes get it wrong when it comes to the subtleties of fashion.

One survey respondent expressed her disdain for both the trend and Bieber's attempt to rock it:

She said: "Why do young guys think it's OK to walk around with their backsides on display? What do they think they are; orangutans?

"Pop stars like Justin Bieber are setting a really bad example by adopting this horrendous trend. It really isn't a good look, no matter how rich and famous you are."

A spokeswoman for JonesandJonesfashion.com, who commissioned the survey, said: "Our customers are fashion savvy young women who have strong views on the latest trends in both female and male fashion.

"It seems there is a general feeling that young guys aren't keeping up with young women in the fashion stakes and this look in particular has been singled out for criticism."

Claiming second place in the ranking were jeggings – jean-effect leggings for anyone who doesn't know – followed by shell suits, leather trousers and cheap jewellery/too much jewellery.

The final five read as follows: hot pants, double denim, fake designer handbags, wearing sportswear at all times and socks with sandals.

With so many potential wrong turns on our journey to becoming fashionistas, it's a wonder we get there at all.Add a Comment

The Booby Trap - Are You Guilty?

Okay ladies. How much thought do you put into your boobs? If we're honest, probably not as much as most men but nevertheless, our boobs deserve some respect. From attracting mates to feeding newborns, a woman's chest fulfills many purposes throughout life yet, even though it's been around for 100 years, it seems that a whopping 80% of us aren't wearing the right size bra. If you ask me, that is far too many boobs suffering undue pressure, tweaking, pinching, sagging, squeezing and general discomfort.

However, research from Bravissimo, to honour the centennial anniversary of the mighty brassiere, has found that perhaps we're not entirely to blame; apparently there are no less than seven 'boobs' we can make when it comes to getting our bra size right and 4 out of 5 of us are making at least one of them!

The Quadraboob - if your boobs are spilling out of the top of your bra, looking like you have 2 spare, then the chances are you need a larger cup size.

The Super Drooper - if your breasts feel like they're resting on your belly, they probably need a bit more support and some strap tightening.

The Ledge - everyone loves a little uplift but if yours have been lifted to the level that you can rest something on them then chances are you need a bigger bra.

The Side Boob - flaunted by Hollywood starlets who simply don't wear a bra at all, the side boob isn't necessarily something you want to see on the High Street. Go up a size if your bra is pushing you out.

The High Riser - one of the most common bra faux pas, this is when the strap at the back rises uncomfortably high. A simple solution is to try a smaller strap size (the number in the measurement)

Saggy Cups - although women with bigger breasts are most likely to commit booby errors, the less well-endowed are culprits too. If the material of your cups is saggy, drop a cup size.

The Big Stand Off - if your bra isn't sitting comfortably below your breasts, snug against your sternum, try dropping a measurement (32, 34, 36 etc)

In a bid to redress this error, Bravissimo has launched a boob school teaching the nation's women how to recognise - and fix - the seven bra faux pas. The lingerie experts recommend that every woman should be properly fitted for a bra at least once and preferably every time you buy a new one. Many lingerie shops offer a free fitting service so, next time you buy a pretty new bra, keep in mind that for it to stay looking gorgeous and sexy, it needs to fit properly.

London Fashion Week: The collections I can't wait to hit the shops

London Fashion Week (LFW) is in full swing and while I'm still waiting patiently for my front row tickets to arrive in the post, I've found that the best way to keep myself amused while the cream of the world's fashion elite display their wares, is to earmark the collections that I hope will be gracing the high street sooner rather than later.

Although Bajan beauty and all round international superstar Rihanna spent just ten seconds gracing the LFW stage with her presence for the debut of her Rihanna For River Island range, I intend to dedicate at least a weekend of souped-up shopping to giving the threads designed by the pop diva a thorough once over.

And while I have yet to put my 'slim for summer' plan into action, (Josie Gibson where are you when I need you?), I am still confident that I will be able to pull off something from the collection's array of dare to bare outfits which includes denim shirts, cropped tops, patterned trousers and smart slip dresses and floral shorts.

Topshop also proved that it continues to take the high street fashion crown with its Unique collection drawing admiring glances from spectators and proving that the words laidback and luxe aren't diametrically opposed.

Understanding that every girl's wardrobe needs to make the transition from day to nightwear as smoothly as possible; the high street retailer's autumn/winter 2013 collection boasted anything from PVC workwear to pink soft shearling coats, what more could us followers of fashion need?

As a fan of all things feminine and floaty, though my day look normally betrays this idea, my eyes were immediately drawn to the sumptuous, romantic dresses created by designer Marios Schwab. One particular light pink, body-con style dress with black floral detailing and what I can only describe matching, long, cape-style jacket, will definitely hit the right notes with me providing I forge ahead with my plan to become fit and fab by the time the temperature gauge reads above 12C.

Matthew Williamson is no stranger to the high street, regularly bringing his distinctly bold and beautiful fashion ranges to retail giants such as Debenhams. It's for this reason that I am entertaining a glimmer of hope that his LFW collection will available in one guise or another, with a price tag that's a little more suited to my modest budget.

Taking inspiration from the idea of 'English rose seeking adventures new', the celebrated British designer showed off a collection featuring signature ethnic embroideries, geometric patterns and a liberal sprinkling of tassels.

With so much to look forward to in both spring/summer and autumn winter, the only decision I'll need to make is how I'll be able to accessorise my 2013 outfits to the hilt.

Going Vintage... it's cheaper than you think

Some of my best discoveries have been made on one of my many prolonged strolls in central London; from unearthing the fact that anyone is able to view Britain's national film and television archive at the British Film Institute (BFI) for free, to the fact that some restaurant voucher deals allow the second diner to eat for just £1!

The latest find took place prior to attending a talk in Covent Garden and, after looking for somewhere to warm up with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, I stumbled across a funkier than usual branch of Costa Coffee.

After getting my beverage from the counter, I took up residence on a suitably slouchy chair and prepared to let the minutes roll by until the talk started. However, while staring out of the window with cup in hand, I locked my beady fashionista eyes on an unassuming clothes shop called Rockit.

Vintage for less

And, like an archaeologist determined to find evidence of a long-forgotten civilisation after a few hours of dedicated digging, I made a beeline for Rockit, proverbial shovel in hand, hoping to find the evidence of the greatest fashion remnants of decades goneby and ready to resurface them for the world (OK, my friends) to see.

Stocking vintage clothing and accessories for women and men from the 1940s to 1980s, Rockit is a veritable treasure trove of fluffy jumpers, leather jackets, cowboy boots, clutch bags, vintage style watches and jewellery and so much more.

And the best part is you can snap up a few choice items of vintage wear, feeling safe in the knowledge that you should have at least a few pounds left in change from a £50 note.

The last time I popped into the store, the majority of customers rifling the racks were trend-conscious tweenagers... proving that it really does pay to be down with the kids when it comes to staying ahead of the fashion game.

But despite having a dedicated following of grungy youngsters, there is plenty on offer for all ages, shapes and sizes – including a 50s-style floral dress (£20) that I recently had my eye on.

Celebrity endorsement

One Direction's Harry Styles was recently spotted out and about shopping for vintage clothes in London, purchasing a pair of vintage Levi's jeans from Rokit.

Harry also popped in to Beyond Retro on London's Brick Lane, which has several branches in London, a store in Brighton and a number of other stores worldwide. A quick browse on the store's website led me to a gorgeous turquoise jumper with puffed sleeves, circa 1990, for the bargain price of £16.50... perfect for a lunch date with the girls.

Moving on to the sale section, my winning streak continued with a vintage 3/4 length sleeve dress with a cross-over front (circa 1980s) for just £9. That's picnic season taken care of!

Whatever next? Kids Fashion Week Set to Toddle into London in March

While few can admit to being dedicated followers of fashion since they were knee high to a grasshopper, it appears that the gap between children and couture is rapidly narrowing as London prepares to host the first ever Global Kids Fashion Week.

Spanning two days in March (19 – 20) the great and glorious from world of fashion, featuring established brands such as Junior Gaultier, Tommy Hilfiger and lesser-known names such as Rachel Riley and Munster Kids, are set to unveil their spring/summer 2013 kiddies collections to the eyes of the waiting public.

A catwalk show will also take place for a press-only event for the autumn/winter 2013-14 trends featuring designers such as Paul Smith Junior and Little Marc Jacobs.

Organised by children's retailer alexandalexa.com, the event is designed to celebrate the evolution of childrenswear over the last five years and put children's fashion firmly "on the map worldwide", according to Alex Theophanous, founder and CEO of the clothing store thereby proving that when it comes to high fashion, the kids are definitely all right.

As well as giving children the opportunity to strut their stuff, the event will also play host to a number of playful activities for children and parents, in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood.

One mother who knows it's never too early to introduce their children to the joys of designer clobber is Kourtney Kardashian who was recently spotted stocking up on goodies for daughter Penelope at Beverly Hills children's couture boutique Bonpoint – despite the fact that her little bundle of joy is just six months old.

Recent rankings of the best dressed celeb kids revealed that A-list youngsters such as Suri Cruise, Harper and Romeo Beckham (how cute did Romeo look in that Burberry shoot?), Kingston Rossdale and Maddox Jolie-Pitt are definitely the ones to turn to if we need style pointers from anyone who is under the age of 13.

Those parents who want to ensure their little ones are dressed to impress while still keeping a firm rein on their budget, may want to head to revamped online children's pre-loved clothing brand, The Clothes Tree.

Three Reasons You'll be Positively Blooming in Spring Fashions

Spring is the season of all things new and that includes a thoroughly updated wardrobe. Out go any remnants of autumnal browns or wintery greys and in comes a dizzying array of colourful garments that wouldn't look out of place in a Monet painting.

You see, the joy of the upcoming season's fashions is that it literally puts a spring in your wannabe catwalk step and drags us out of the doldrums of our not-so-high-fashion winter wear. Onesies anyone?

So wave a fond farewell to your cosy knits, slouchy knee highs and snoods and wave hello to suits, sandals and more.
