By The Man About Town

A single man in London who likes to spend but who likes to save even more!

Things to do in London when you're single

I know what you're thinking; how is it that a savvy, sporty, witty bloke like me is still worrying about going on dates at my age? And how it is that I haven't been snapped up yet?!  Well, I ask myself the same question all the time and, frankly, I don't want to think about the answer. Maybe I'm married to golf, cricket and sport in general? Whatever the reason, the fact remains that when embarking on a series of dates one thing is for sure; to impress and have fun can really burn a hole in your wallet and that can pose all manner of issues.

  • You don't want to appear 'tight' with cash. Nobody wants to be with someone like that.
  • You don't want to over spend and set the wrong tone. Do that and you could end up with the bailiffs coming round and that is a sure fire way to lose a woman's interest.
  • Finding fun and interesting things to do can take time, which a lot of people don't have. And you don't want to take your date to Westfield time after time as that is another way to look 'dull'.
  • You have enough to worry about in the way you act on your date, so you want the location to help you as much as you can.

Apple Store Opens at Covent Garden; Free T-Shirts Steal Spotlight

Although the majority of the talk surrounding Apple as of late has been centred on the iPhone 4's various antenna issues, the company was, at least for a day, allowed a bit of reprieve from the public as they handed out free t-shirts to customers on August 7th. At the company's new flagship store in Covent Garden, London, thousands of people stood in queue to be among the select few who would receive a shirt commemorating the store's opening date and location.

While even the most ardent Apple supporters would admit that the free shirts lack the flash of some of the company's more recent products  like the iPad and the aforementioned iPhone 4, many claimed that the appeal of the shirts were due more to their limited numbers.

August brings sweltering heat and new shoes to love.

With the summer sun scorching down on us, the beginning of August seems like a mixed blessing. Though the week is set to start off with rain falling throughout the UK, I am aware that we have more heat coming our way and I am not ready to pack up my sandals in favor of my wellies just yet. One of the blessings August brings are all the end of summer sales taking place. My gladiator sandals aren't looking so fabulous anymore, although I guess two festivals and running around the underground will do that to thin leather straps. Until now, though I wasn't ready to invest in another pair, and as much as I love a new pair of heels with each dress, this economy has hampered my fashionista rituals greatly. With stores stocking up for Back to School and being under their own pressure from a hard economy, the early sales have brought deep discounts with them. Read More »

Perfect for Sending Gifts Back Home

I'm an ex-pat living in Alberta Canada, and I've been using Savoo for nearly a year now. My best friend for over 20 years told me about it when I was looking for a birthday present for my mum. The problem I had was shipping whatever gift I bought from Canada to the UK which was crazy cos I was ending up paying more for postage than I spent on the actual present.

To be honest I'd heard of vouchers before but hadn't used them, but figured I had nothing to lose. My mum is a big fan of Elemis products and would always buy them from QVC so I was really pleased to find the Elemis Time to Spa site on Savoo. I ordered a really nice gift set and with the voucher code got a 15% discount too.

But the best part was that because it's a UK shop I didn't have to pay a fortune to have it delivered to my mum's house in Yorkshire. That's why I love Savoo. Read More »

Debenhams - Breaking the Taboo

By Clodagh Foelster(view all posts by Clodagh Foelster)

We have to hand it to High Street favourite Debenhams who has become the first British retailer to use a disabled model in a big advertising campaign - the relaunch of their best-loved Principles brand by Ben de Lisi.

The photography breaks taboo by featuring 32-year-old model Shannon Murray, who has been confined to a wheelchair since breaking her neck as a teenager. Speaking to the Daily Mail she says "I hope the images challenge a few misconceptions about disability; it's been a long time coming."

Here at Savoo we couldn't agree more. We were impressed when Debenhams replaced all their traditional mannequins with Size 16 ones, but we love this latest campaign which not only features Ms Murray, but also other 'non-conventional' models including size 16 model Kate Fullman, tiny 5'4" Tess Montgomery, and Tokumbo Daniel, a size 10 model.
