Money Saving Tips
By Marc Lockley, Guardian Online Columnist and Author of "How to Pay Less For More"
It took a while but we got there, winter chill is kicking in and the heating systems are beginning to ignite but soaring costs have meant around 4 million homes in England have been hit by fuel poverty which is measured by a homeowner spending 10% or more of their income on fuel.
Benjamin Franklin once said "in this world there is nothing certain but death and taxes" though I feel rising energy costs could soon be added to this quote. To thwart escalating prices over the last eighteen months I have looked at practical ways to save and my efforts have been rewarded with £180 annual saving. Considering the recent price hikes, I'm pleased with this.

In the current economic climate, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to look for ways to save money in any way they can.
A number of global economies are at best stagnant and at worst in
serious danger of failing to recover from the recent financial crisis
sufficiently. Considering this, it is
important to save
in both large and small areas of the business. From office furniture to
the number of paperclips you order, everything has to be accounted for.
Below are three of the main areas in which money can be saved in the business world;

One of the most common problems encountered in the retail world is how to find the best deals. The problem with a lot of supposedly 'good offers' is that they actually offer a false economy and are not always as beneficial as they seem. So, how can you sort the rough from the smooth and find the best deals this Christmas?
The first thing to remember is that sometimes an offer isn't quite as
good as it seems. A common complaint is over 'half-price' offers which
don't always live up to their name. The problem here is that some stores
will often sell a particular product at a higher price than normal for a
certain length of time. After this they will cut the price in half,
advertising this saving and attracting the attention of a number of
customers.

My husband and I don't have children, which is probably a good thing as I can't spend more than two hours with other people's kids. I've actually timed it. One hour and 59 minutes with your five year old and I can be completely pleasant. For two whole hours your pesky kid can scream and throw tantrums as much as he likes and then I stop trying to hide my wincing and looks of disappointment. Two hours is the limit for me before I can no longer keep a fake smile on face when they put their sticky hands on my glass dining room table. One minute later and I start complaining of headaches and become crabby.

Last week Gucci opened a store specifically for children. It's the
only boutique solely for children on New York's Fifth Avenue and is aimed more at the Suri Cruises of the world rather than children of more modest backgrounds like yours and mine. Now, while I
could find the money to pay £250 for a pair of pink suede boots for my 6 year old, there is no way I would. Apart from the fact that I have better things to spend my money on, I just don't see the point and, if I'm honest, it makes me a little mad to think of that sort of money being spent on something that will last, at best, a few weeks.

Savvy shoppers will have noticed that, over the Christmas period, the shops considerably busier as well as open for longer. Of course, with work and school and everyday errands, people are restricted on when they can hit the High Street, meaning that late evenings and weekends are prime times for shopping mayhem.

Certain attractions are particularly popular over the Christmas season with families visiting outdoor ice rinks, markets and theatres as a way of celebrating the festivities. However, a new exhibition at the National Gallery has meant that, this year, Da Vinci will be added to the list of Christmas attractions.
The exhibition, which will be open to the public until February, is
already sold-out until mid December with large crowds expected. It will
contain nine paintings by the famous artist along with a number of
sketches and drawings. These pieces are being loaned to London's gallery
by European galleries such as The Louvre (Paris) and the Vatican Art
Gallery (Rome).
Whilst the National Gallery offers free admission
to visitors, the Da Vinci exhibition will require customers to purchase
a ticket. Full price adult tickets will cost £16 but
discounts are available for certain groups.

I don't know about you but this gloomy weather is seriously putting a dampener on my productivity around the house. The dirty laundry sits in the hamper for days and only gets washed because nothing passes the sniff test, I eat cookies for lunch instead of a real meal because everything else requires preparation and blog posts don't get written until the very last minute (many apologies to my dear editor!)
