Bulk up on a Budget

Do you ever flick through the pages of a men's bodybuilding magazine and worry about how you're going to kick start your new lifestyle? Not because you don't think you have the body for it but because you don't have the budget?

Bulking up on a shoestring can often be difficult. You have to think about filling your fridge and tummy with expensive fresh food, the soaring gym membership, those pricey protein shakes and even new clothes.

There are obstacles to getting the perfect body on a tight budget but, by using a little creativity and taking advantage of deals, you can do it.

Diet

Any seasoned bodybuilder or gym addict will tell you that a good nutritional diet is absolutely essential. Fortunately, this doesn't mean that you have to eat gourmet filet mignon for lunch every day. Veggies are actually a great way to bulk up while keeping the cost down.

So, now you know meat isn't absolutely everything, it's important to remember that you can actually improve your diet by getting the right balance of different foods. To get a protein-packed meal, try combining carbohydrates, such as rice or pasta, with legumes, vegetables, seeds and nuts.

Supplements

The first thing I picture when I think of bodybuilders is protein shakes and energy bars. However, you probably don't need to guzzle quite as many as you think, especially if you're new to it. It's good to have an extra boost after training but don't get carried away with three or four a day.

The cost of supplements can sky-rocket but Myprotein has a great clearance page where you can get your hands on all sorts of goodies for less than you might think. You can save up to £4.50 on Oat & Whey bars which can even be eaten as a meal replacement and get £5 off muscle recovery supplements. You'll save a small fortune by taking advantage of expensive supplements when they're discounted.

Exercise

Although you will have to visit the gym in order to get your body in tip-top shape, you don't need to splash out on a costly monthly membership. These health clubs are likely to have lots of exercise classes and facilities that you're not going to use. Check out the gyms in your local area as there might be one that's more specific to your needs.

It might seem daunting but it is possible to achieve the stronger overall physique you've always wanted without blowing your budget.

Add a Comment

Ahhh....the great British summer! It's a time to head for the beach, update our wardrobe with bold, colourful shorts and pack our freezers with ice cream. This is all necessary of course, how else would we be able to enjoy the summer? Well, how about putting a little more effort into the house? We change just about every aspect of our lives when it hits the summer time, from our daily routines to the contents of our fridge. So, why does this not apply to the décor?

Changing things up inside the house can breathe fresh new life into your home. Take a look at these top ideas and see what you could achieve with a few bits and bobs from House of Fraser.

Change the cushion covers

You might be surprised at what a difference this can make to your living room. Instead of changing the colour of the walls, just buy some snazzy new cushion covers. Try to either go for a neutral/pastel or a bright and bold colour for a summer look.

Linea lime cotton cushion with contrast piping NOW £10 / Living By Christiane Lemieux NOW £ 28/ Pied a Terre Hand Stitched Cushion NOW £21

Take down the curtains

Ideally, it's great to leave your windows open during the summer but that's not always possible.
Boux Avenue Review

My underwear and nightwear wardrobe consisted of a mish-mash of my old maternity items that I hadn't got around to clearing out and some very old nightwear going back many years. My underwear and nightwear wardrobe consisted of a mish-mash of my old maternity items that I hadn't got around to clearing out and some very old nightwear going back many years. So I was very much in need of something new.A few days later a gorgeous gift box arrived containing my voucher. Boux Avenue gift wrap all orders in a Boux Avenue box containing beautiful lace print tissue paper and scented rose petals - simply gorgeous! From that moment I knew I was in for a treat. Boux Avenue pride themselves on this signature gift wrapping service and it is fantastic that this is offered free of charge on all purchases. It helps make the whole experience feel so much more special whether you are treating yourself or buying a gift for someone. For anyone worrying about the eco-impact of additional packaging, Boux Avenue do offer the option of just having the outer delivery box. However, in our household any beautiful packaging always gets re-used in some way whether for wrapping other treats in or to use in crafts - I knew that nothing would to go to waste, so I could relax and enjoy the pretty packaging. I had imagined being able to purchase a new bra and knickers set with the gift voucher but I was amazed to see just how far my voucher stretched. I opted for non-wired bras (as I still breast-feed twice a day so I didn't want to risk wired-bras interfering with that) and these were very reasonably priced. I chose this microfibre non-wired bra, which as well as being very soft and flexible is also very supportive. The other bra I picked out was the Corrine Lace-trim moulded bra which is a really pretty style as well as being comfortable. And it didn't stop there, I was also able to pick out some new pyjama trousers which I needed. Both pairs that I liked the most were on offer price so I was able to get both as well as a pair of mega-comfy Trudie Yoga pants. I chose the Shipwrecked gingham pyjama pants and the Shipwrecked lollies pyjama pants. Shipwrecked gingham pyjama pants from Boux AvenueThe pyjama trousers were 100% cotton and had a roll-up feature where you could turn-up the legs if you wish to into a three-quarter length style. They also had an elasticated waist and an additional drawstring around the waist too. and with legs buttoned-up for three-quarter length styleAll items felt accurately sized to me. The trouser legs did seem a little on the long side but with the roll-up feature on the pyjamas this wasn't a problem. Shipwrecked lollies pyjama pants from Boux AvenueI have been wearing the yoga pants virtually non-stop since they arrived. They are just so comfy and have a lovely fold-down waistband which actually looks really flattering. When placing my order online, I did have a few technical difficulties where the website just wasn't playing ball, but a quick phonecall to Boux Avenue's Freephone customer service number and they simply took the details and placed the order over the telephone for me. Leaving me very impressed with the high standard of customer service. And if you pop over to Savoo's facebook page right now, they have a fantastic competition with a £250 voucher for Boux Avenue to be won. Just imagine all the lovely items you would be able to buy with that! Disclosure: I was given a £50 gift card to spend on any items I wished online at Boux Avenue. The opinions given in this review are my own honest opinions.Add a Comment

Make Your Own Febreze for Pennies

Like many people, I like to balance living frugally with living nicely and, no matter how hard I try, there are some little luxuries that I can't give up. Of course, like most 'luxuries' these are often overpriced and totally unnecessary.

Take, for example, air fresheners and fabric fresheners. I like my house to smell nice - not always an easy thing to achieve with 5 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats. And I am a sucker for Febreze - by the end of the day, you'd never guess that my sofas have been walked over and sat on by messy teenage kids, dirty smelly dogs and politely farting cats.

But, at two quid a bottle in supermarkets like Asda and Tesco (and even more in other places), it's a luxury that's, quite simply, starting to cost too much money. The solution? A quick internet search and some experimenting has found me a perfect alternative that costs about 30 pence!

Cheat's Febreze Recipe

1/4 cup of fabric softener (own brand or well-known names, it doesn't matter. You even get to choose your favourite smell)
4 tbsp baking soda
A spray bottle (I used an empty Febreze bottle I already had or you can pick spray bottles up in Poundland)
Warm water

Put all the ingredients into your spray bottle, shake well and go ahead and spray everywhere - sofas, curtains, cushions, bedding.

I was concerned it might stain but, having sprayed everything from chocolate brown suede to sunshine yellow cotton, so far no stains or marks. If you are worried about any particular fabric, colour test an inconspicuous area and let it dry first. You can also use less fabric softener to further dilute it.

So there you have it - quick, simple and economical way to get rid of those unwanted odours!Add a Comment

Glimmer of Light at the Supermarket Pump

Drivers will have reason to smile a bit today as supermarkets slash up to 3p off a litre of petrol following the cut in diesel prices last week. The move, predicted several days ago by the AA, is in response to a drop in the price of oil and an increase in the pound against the dollar.

Supermarkets sell nearly half of all petrol sold in the UK but, despite this, research from petrolprices.com suggests that the average price of a litre of unleaded petrol is still 137.8p while diesel comes in at 141.92p.

However, from today Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's have all vowed to cut the price of petrol by 2p a litre while Morrison's is taking 3p off. This means that Asda customers, for example, will be spending no more than 133.7p per litre of petrol and 137.7p for diesel.

The biggest cut comes Morrison's where diesel is also being reduced by a further 1p. Petrol director, Mark Todd, said yesterday, "Further falls in wholesale prices mean we can pass savings on to customers and continue to offer some of the lowest prices on the market."Add a Comment

Well, if you love shopping at Asda, I've got a little secret to share with you; Asda now has a clearance page!

Asda is already a firm favourite with UK shoppers because of its commitment to low prices which are lower than any other supermarket, but they now have a clearance page as well.

The chances are that you've never spotted it because it may seem complex to find the link from the home page. However, by entering 'clearance' into the search bar, you'll be taken directly to the sale. Or you can click here and get there even quicker. It's easy-peasy!

I wasn't expecting to find any real bargains but it actually had a really attractive range of quality furniture, entertainment, gifts and baby products. I couldn't believe how much great stuff was actually on there.

Many of the savings are less than a fiver but every now and again there is a real bargain in the clearance where you could save £20 or more, particularly in the baby and home sections.

It's worth checking back and keeping an eye out because you'll kick yourself if you end up paying full price.Add a Comment

How to Make Your Childcare Budget Stretch Further

This is a guest post by Sigrid Daniel, the Country Director at Care.com UK, the world's largest online destination for care.

Childcare is expensive, there is no way of getting around that!

Every week we are reminded of the relative expense of childcare in the UK compared to other countries: we spend an average of 25% of our income on childcare, leaving us second only to Switzerland, that land of gold bars, flash ski resorts, cuckoo clocks and...expensive childcare.

So, if you both want to work, how do you manage it?

Here are a few tips to get you started.

First, work out exactly how much you can afford then keep these tips in mind when you start to look at care options for your children:

Free care for under Fives

This free care is available at the moment for all 3 and 4 year olds and will extend in some cases to two year olds for 15 hours per week, 38 weeks per year. Make sure that the provision you organise will allow easy or automatic transition onto free care and allows you to take the free allocation at a time that is suitable or convenient for you. Don't forget it is not means tested for 3 and 4 year olds so be sure to take advantage of it.

The commute from your home. This is often overlooked; make sure you tot up the extra petrol or public transport costs to get to and from your care provision as well as the additional commute time and factor this into your decision. Also consider mileage costs for activities if a nanny is looking after your children.

Is a nanny share possible? This is a great solution if you live within easy reach of like-minded families. A nanny share can take many different shapes or forms; all children cared for under one roof or dividing up the nanny's week so that, for example, you employ her during school hours while the other family employs her for school age children at the beginning and end of the school day. You can also split the tax code, effectively lowering your tax burden.

Do you have more than one child under 5? If you believe that nothing can beat at-home childcare, don't forget that a nanny or childminder can often be cheaper when you count days off nursery that your child may need due to illness and more than one set of nursery fees. Able to look after children while ill, nannies are also more flexible in terms of their working hours while childminders will offer longer hours than many other care options. If you combine a childminder with nanny or nursery, you can make the budget stretch far without compromising what you want for your child.

School Age Children: At this age, consider using an au pair, a babysitter or instituting a shared drop off and pick up with neighbours or other working parents who are likely to be in the same situation as you and will appreciate the returned favour.

Care.com: We can't resist stating the obvious. Posting a job on Care.com really is one of the most efficient and economical ways of letting carers find you. By writing a clear and complete job description you are ensuring that the widest audience possible can find your family and start applying for your childcare job.

Whatever care you choose, we wish you the best of luck with finding quality care!Add a Comment

How To Make The Most Of Your Nectar Points

I've got a few supermarket loyalty cards sitting in my purse but I didn't realise that they could be costing me money! By not maximising the benefits offered by loyalty cards, we could collectively be wasting £5.2 billion by not reaping the rewards.

It's thought that around 20% of British adults sign up to loyalty cards without even realising what benefits they offer. Another surprising figure is that a third of us forget to take them with us when we're out shopping and so are missing out on hundreds or thousands of points.

Nectar scheme

Sainsbury's shoppers will probably have heard of Nectar, the UK's biggest loyalty scheme but did you know that Nectar points could also be earned at BP, Debenhams, Amazon, Argos and eBay as well?

Nectar has hundreds of partners around the UK so you could be earning points left, right and centre. You don't even have to be shopping as you can also get points when booking a flight with Expedia or paying your household bills with EDF Energy.

Earning & redeeming points

To make the most of your Nectar card, you will need to do your weekly grocery shopping at Sainsbury's as you will earn 2 points for every £1 spent. The other Nectar partners will still earn points but only 1 point per £1.

Once you have collected enough points, you can start spending them in-store and online or trade them for other things such as cinema tickets and days out. All you have to do is hand over your card in-store and the points will be taken straight from your balance.

If you're not sure about how many points you've collected, you can log in to your account online. Each point is worth £0.005p, so 500 points is typically worth £2.50. This might not sound like much, but believe me, every penny - or should I say point - adds up.

Promotions

I realised that by keeping an eye out for deals and promotions in Sainsbury's and other Nectar scheme retailers, I can actually earn more points. Sometimes you will see promotions offering double or triple Nectar points on certain items ultimately making you more money.

I have been very eagle-eyed over the past couple of years and noticed that Nectar has been holding a summer sale. The sale usually offers a product, often from the entertainment or electrical sections, for half the usual points, effectively meaning that you are getting it half price.

Loyalty cards are a great way to get loads of things for free but if we don't take advantage of the rewards available then we could be losing out on billions of pounds.Add a Comment

Buying From Ann Summers: Top Tips For Men

It takes a brave man to buy anything intimate for their girlfriend but get it right and you will be eternally
rewarded.

Although your heart is probably in the right place, it can be so easy to make common mistakes in this area. I do feel sorry for the guys that want to treat their other half so I'm giving my top tips to men thinking of buying from Ann Summers.

Size matters

Whilst she might tell you that 'size isn't everything', she's lying. Size is very important, particularly when it comes to her smalls. The best way to make sure you're not offending her with underwear that is three sizes too big is to check her lingerie drawer. Don't just look at one pair of knickers though; the sizing scales can vary from one shop to another (it's complicated).

Turn up the heat

If you're jumping into the deep end and buying her a 'rabbit' or something similar, have a think about what she likes between the sheets. Consider if there is anything lacking in the bedroom department, as a toy can really turn up the heat in this sphere. Don't forget the lube or your night of passion could turn into a night to forget.

Buy what she likes

This is my most obvious tip but it's one where generations of men have faltered. Don't buy what you think she would look good in, buy what she likes to wear. Take inspiration from her current lingerie drawer and buy along the same lines. There is nothing wrong with sexing it up a little but go too far and you could be sleeping in the spare room.

Emphasise her best features

You will no doubt be aware of the bits of the body that your girlfriend or wife just doesn't like. It's your job to ensure that she never feels inadequate so don't buy anything that means she will have to think about them. For example, if she's constantly complaining about her thighs, stockings and suspenders are probably a no-go area. This is just sensible planning that could be the difference between you hitting the target present-wise and being way off the mark!

Right time & place

It's no secret that women like surprises and being showered with gifts. With this in mind, thoughtful boyfriends might earn some serious brownie points by sending a huge bunch of flowers to their office. However, it's not a good idea to employ the same tactic for anything bought from Ann Summers. She might like a kinky surprise at home but not in front of her boss.

So, there you have it guys. With a little thought and careful planning you could surprise your better half with the perfect present from Ann Summers. Just remember the old saying; 'Failure to prepare is nothing more than preparing to fail'.Add a Comment

Amazon Prime Review - How It Can Save You Money

Are you addicted to Amazon? Do you like the sound of free,
one-day delivery? Amazon Prime might be right up your street.

If, like me, you can't go a week without finding a great
deal on Amazon, you might be able to benefit from their exclusive subscription
delivery service. Amazon Prime gives free, one day delivery on millions of
products, but it will set you back £49 a year – or just over £4 a month.

At first you might be put off by the annual cost of Amazon
Prime, but it can actually save the right person some serious cash in the long
run.

Aside from not actually having to pay out for delivery
charges, what other benefits exist?

Quick delivery

Well, the most obvious advantage to having an Amazon Prime subscription is the free One-Day Delivery. However, if you're desperate
for the item, there are other delivery options available. Amazon Prime members
will get Express Delivery for £4.49 instead of £8.99 and Evening Delivery for
£7.48 compared to £14.99.

No minimum order

Well, as you probably know, Amazon sells millions of things
at great prices, from more extravagant purchases like computers or furniture to
much smaller items, such as pens and paper.

Instead of heading into town to visit a local store and
spending two or three times the amount on the same product, buy from Amazon and
get free one-day delivery as there are no minimum orders.

Last minute gifts

How often do you forget someone's birthday? If you're
anything like me… it might be quite often! Since having my Amazon Prime
subscription, I've been able to order items at the very last minute and still
give my gift on time.

In the past I've had to give up my Amazon addiction and
actually shop elsewhere as the standard three to five day delivery format just
wouldn't suit. First Class delivery is, of course, available in most cases, but
it costs more (often more than a month's subscription!) and still isn't as
quick as one-day delivery.

Free Kindle borrowing

If you own a Kindle and you're a real book worm, you can
borrow one book per month from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library for free and
with no return date. There are hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, including
top sellers.

Share the cost

If you live in a house of Amazon lovers - perhaps your
partner, mum or flatmate are always buying online too – you could even share
the annual membership cost. If there's two of you, your monthly cost has
already been slashed to just £2.05.

When one-day delivery rates start at £3.95 and go up to
£7.99, you can immediately see the benefits for regular customers.

Free trial

If you think that Amazon Prime sounds right up your street,
you don't have to commit right away. You could always take the free trial for
one month and see how you get on – what have you got to lose?

Six Ways to Cut the Cost of Food Shopping

If you thought the horse meat headlines couldn't get any worse, now retail experts are warning that the cost of groceries is likely to go up as a result.

The big supermarkets have admitted that they cannot guarantee quality without putting up prices. But for many households, the cost of putting food on the table is already higher than ever.

Here are six ways to spend less on your food shopping.

1. Know your supermarket For many of us, the supermarket offers too many temptations especially when you consider that these retailers take steps to persuade you to spend more money.
One way supermarkets do this is to place their most expensive products at eye level so you are tempted to buy them. Cut costs and always look higher up or lower down in the same section then you will often find similar items at a cheaper price.

It also pays to look carefully at deals and discounts. These may look attractive but will often be an attempt to make you buy more food than you meant to. Don't assume bigger packs are always cheaper, either. Doing your maths can save you a fortune.

2. Compare online and save

If you do all your food shopping online and have a choice of many supermarkets that deliver in your area, why not place your order at the cheapest retailer?

With mysupermarket.co.uk you can compare the cost of your weekly shop with Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado.

Once you've decided which supermarket to use, it can save your shopping list directly so that you don't have to type it in again. It also has a selection of voucher codes you can use for each company to help you get even more money off.

Save on the cost of delivery and opt to have your shopping delivered at an unpopular time, for example, during normal working hours or a late-evening delivery.

3. Get paid to shop

Everyone shops at a supermarket so why not make some cash at the same time?

Cash back websites such as Quidco.com and Topcashback.com have recently launched tools to save you money on your food shop.

If you normally shop online you will already be familiar with cash back websites which allow you to gain a percentage of your spend back by clicking through them before you go to your preferred online store.

The new tools allow you to earn cash back by taking a picture of your physical receipt and gaining cash back from the products you put in your trolley

Quidco's ClickSnap, works with Ocado, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Asda and Tesco. While Topcashback's Snap and Save works with receipts from Tesco, Asda, Morrison's, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, the Co-operative, M&S Food and Iceland.

However, bear in mind that there is a limit on the amount of cash back that can be earned. For instance, Quidco offers can be redeemed a maximum of three times per three-week period cycle while Topcashback can only be redeemed once a week.

4. Know your alternatives

It might be convenient, but the supermarket is not always cheapest. Fruit and vegetables are often less expensive at your local market, where they may not look as pretty but the taste is similar.

Many items are sold by the bowlful and you may end up with more than you need but many vegetables can be partially cooked and then frozen, while fruit can also be frozen to use later.

For help with freezer guidelines, the Food Standards Agency has a consumer website eatwell.gov.uk. This explains how to freeze many foods safely. Similarly, a butcher is not always a more expensive option for buying meat, especially since he can give you advice on how to cook cheaper cuts and provide you with the exact quantities you need so you don't throw anything away.

5. Don't throw out food unnecessarily

Most of the food we throw away is actually still perfectly good and more people than ever are saving money by buying out-of-date food.

Online retailer Approved Foods (approvedfoods.co.uk), which helps people buy food that is out of date but not yet gone off, says it is receiving a record number of orders since the start of the economic crisis as consumers struggle to make ends meet.

However, before you start eating anything that looks dodgy, bear in mind that according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), it is not safe to consume milk or foods such as smoked fish which go off quickly if they have passed their "use-by date". However, a "best-before" date is usually for foods that last longer, such as frozen, dried or canned goods.

According to the FSA, food will be safe after this date, if no longer be at its best although, never eat eggs after the "best-before" date because salmonella bacteria could start to multiply. For information on out-of-date food visit eatwell.gov.uk/foodlabels.

6. Own-brands doesn't mean scrimping on flavour

Add to your savings and opt for supermarket own-label brands and shave as much as 20pc off your normal spend. Visit website supermarketownbrandguide.co.uk, which reviews more than 10,000 products at stores such as Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer to ensure that when you by a discounted brand you are not sacrificing quality.
Add a Comment

Should Price Glitch Orders be Fulfilled?

If you were eagle-eyed enough to notice the price glitch that happened on the Debenhams website recently (as reported on This is Money) you will, no doubt, be disappointed not to get the amazing deal or deals you were promised. Debenhams has decided that it can't fulfil all the hundreds of orders that were placed for Land's End items – some of which were reduced by as much as 99%.

But I wonder what the response from a retailer would be if the shoe were
on the other foot? I have no doubt that a company like Debenhams –
which I should mention does offer great deals and vouchers already –
would be happy to help a consumer who had made a mistake. But does
holding its hand up, admitting a mistake and then refusing the sale make
it right?

My first reaction is 'no'! They made the mistake, I bought something and I expect for the order to be fulfilled. But then I started to think; we all make mistakes and some things in life really are too good to be true. This may have been human error and I wouldn't want to see someone lose their job over a silly mistake. I'm sure my opinion may be different if I had actually ordered something thinking I had the deal of the century but, as I didn't, I think it's just about reasonable for Debenhams to not lose lots of money over one 'glitch'.

You should keep your eyes peeled for mistakes though, as lots of retailers will honour prices they put on their sites and there are lots of other money-saving blogs that will list amazing deals. But you should remember that you should only buy something that's on at an amazing price if you really need it! Otherwise, it really is a waste of money as it will probably just sit at the back of your wardrobe for months unless you eBay it, I guess.

I'd keep a lookout on Debenhams though as, you never know, this may happen again. And, if it does, I have no doubt they will have to honour the sale a second time around!Add a Comment
