It seems there is no end to the heights technology can reach as I discover news that a miniature 'flying carpet' has actually been created! The technology, whilst still in its infancy, works fairly well and could be seen skimming across the Martian landscape when perfected, making me ask a very important question: is there anything we can't do?

Hannah Boukley is a busy mum-of-one who
divides her days between looking after her son and working full time as
an editor for mobile phone website, Recombu.
I hate paying full price for anything and will use technology - whether apps or deal codes - wherever possible to save money. There's a question that's creating a lot of interest at the moment: what sort of phone should you get for your child? I'm a mother myself, although my son is very young so can't dial a number quite yet but his technical prowess is far beyond what mine was at that age.

Editor's note; Our bloggers have covered the recent news stories surrounding first the HP tablet and now the Amazon tablet but not everyone is completely 'tablet savvy' or necessarily as enthralled with them, so here's a different side to all the current buzz.
No, I'm not asking for medicinal recommendations (although perhaps I should) but I am, of course, referring to the new phenomenon of the technological age: the computer Tablet. While most, if not all, of my friends have invested in these devices I have remained firmly in the "I don't need one" camp but is this true?

Following on from last week, I thought I would continue the 'Brand of the Week' segment by taking a look at another old favourite. Skittles are today's brand of choice, so what is the secret behind their success?

With winter on the way, we all knew that it would only be a matter of time before the seasonal CDs began to hit the market. Stars are often eager to get a title out during the colder weather, hoping that Christmas will see their sales grow dramatically. Dedicating an entire album to snow, however, is unheard of – or at least it was until Kate Bush announced the intended release of such an album for November!

I thought I would try something new today and begin a 'brand of the week' type segment. The fact is, it has always fascinated me how certain products and brands are able to cement themselves in our minds with one catchy slogan or a particularly memorable advert.

Shopping Advice
As you likely have heard, what with it being all over the news, the Microsoft's new Kinect motion controller was released earlier this week. However, before you go rushing out to buy one, you probably want to ensure that it's worth the investment. £130 is a rather large investment for an accessory for your gaming console, after all. I mean, with that much money, you could purchase a
new clothes dryer from Asda. So, with options like those on the table, how do you choose where to spend your money? That's where Savoo comes in.

It's always nice to be the first among your friends to have whatever fancy new gadget has just been released. You get to relish in the attention of everyone crowding around you as you show off the myriad of features your device is bound to have. While that's all good and well, the price of this recognition often comes at a steep cost: As one of the first to own an item, you also tend to become one of the first people to discover its flaws. While these are typically minor quirks that can easily be overlooked, other times they can be a bit more crippling (not to beat a dead horse, but the iPhone 4's antenna issues are a prime example of this). That said, we're not entirely sold on the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile platform being released by Microsoft.

With school soon starting, there's certainly a more than reasonable chance that many of you are looking to purchase or have just recently purchased a new computer. If that's the case, you'll probably have noticed that your computer is missing some essential pieces of software, such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, and a quality antivirus program. Purchasing copies of these programs new can cost upwards of several hundred pounds, making that a rather pricey option, especially for students.
Fortunately, there are a number of alternatives to these that are
available completely free of charge. Though they might not offer quite
the same functionality or versatility, more often than not, they provide
more than enough to get your work done. Below is some of what we've
found to be the cream of the crop:

As we noted in our
previous post, being a gamer can be hard on the wallet. With new releases often priced somewhere in the neighbourhood of £35 and £40, every new title is a considerable investment. That said, however, it's still entirely possible to find ways to waste your time playing games (let's be honest, gaming isn't exactly an activity you'd call productive) without breaking the bank. Here are a few more of our favourites:

For perhaps the first time in history, nearly every major video game release is an epic experience of overwhelming proportions that needs to be experienced firsthand to be fully appreciated. And while that's a brilliant thing for gamers (as well as a bit of hyperbole), it also presents something of a conundrum: paying for those titles can become quite pricey. So, to help you save a bit of money, here's the first of our two part instalment on how to find free and discounted games.
