Choosing the ideal location for your next break in the sun normally involves a quick rifle through travel agent magazines, a search of comparison sites or simply placing the names of a few tropical getaways into a hat and taking your chances. However, for the more passive travellers there is an even easier way to plan your holiday itinerary without putting too much strain on your grey matter; simply switch on the box.

Picture it; you're lazing on the beach with your other half, soaking up the sun and enjoying a chilled-
out wave of relaxation. Home feels very far away, you've forgotten about the bills coming in and the work sitting in your in-tray; this is what holidays are all about. Suddenly a shadow blocks out the sun as your partner jumps up and exclaims: "I've just got a text in from work, sorry, there's something urgent I need to deal with." And with that the lovely holiday feeling disappears.
This is the reality for many of us now when we go on holiday, especially
since the international roaming charges got cheaper. We'll be rubbing
in the suncream with half an eye on the email inbox
or sitting
around waiting before heading off to see the sights while a loved one
watches a document slowly download through the hotel wi-fi.

It's raining, it's pouring, the students are snoring. That may not be precisely how the song goes but it is the general sentiment of the season with students looking to escape the dreary weather and embrace some summer sunshine.
The only hindrance, however, is the distinct lack of financial means to jet off to some exotic location. The solution? A frantic search for cheap holidays that will not do too much damage to the latest and final installment of the student loan.

Wow – what a holiday. While you lot were buying umbrellas and cursing the newly acquired hole in the shoe, Turkey and its Mediterranean coast line in particular, were basking in a very pleasant 25 degrees and zero precipitation.

Pancakes draped in maple syrup, silly moose hats and mile upon mile of verdant forest make Canada a veritable box of traveller delights. If you've already sampled the best of what the US has to offer, you'll find that Canada has enough charm to give its stateside rivals a genuine run for their money.

Booking a holiday without a quick scan of comparison sites or the latest travel deals is a serious holidaymaker faux pas. With the news that the UK has slipped back into a recession, now is the perfect time to channel your inner haggler and settle for nothing less than an absolute bargain for your trip to sunnier climes.

While most travellers prefer to go 'free-range' as opposed to being constrained by a package holiday, others love the idea of having every detail taken care of on their behalf so that they can devote even more time to soaking up the sun. If you are part of the latter group, you may be tempted to join the devoted group of cruise aficionados across the globe.

The various islands of Greece have a touch of everything - translucent water lapping upon golden sand, a unique and traditional culture that has remained untouched for years, rolling mountains carpeted in pine trees and idyllic whitewashed villages perched on verdurous hillsides.

Is it just me or do you 'go off' something the minute it's hyped up by the traveller set? Friends have recently raved about both Dublin and Barcelona and I found both a little disappointing. Although I was staying in a four star hotel in Dublin, the whole weekend was a bit of a damp squib and my friends and I were dismayed by the inflated prices offered at Dublin eateries. Barcelona also scored pretty low on my 'holiday heaven' barometer. Yes, Las Ramblas was okay but, once you've strolled up and down it a few times, it begins to bear more than a passing resemblance to the average UK high street.

Before I travelled to the United States, I was fed a healthy diet of images from Hollywood movies which promised hot dogs, horse rides around Central Park and quarterbacks on every corner. The 'land of opportunity' didn't quite live up to this ideal image but it certainly delivered on a number of levels. After spending 3 weeks in what was possibly the most random summer job of all time, changing the livery on black cabs in an underground car park in Barbican, I had siphoned away enough money to join my friend on her BUNAC job in New England.

Haven Holidays has 35 family holiday parks dotted around the coast and have found that it's a really popular choice for lots of grandparents who like to bring their grandchildren there. Of course, it's hardly surprising, with plenty of green space, fresh air and fabulous sandy beaches to run around on, what parents and grandparents like the most is that the parks are all safe and secure.
