Personally, I've given up on buying games and just rent from Lovefilm these days, you can get a free trial and it's a great way to cycle through games.

In terms of recommendations, Red Dead Redemption is still a blast to play and isn't as gory as some of the other games out there. Best bet is to sort by popularity at any of these sites, and give an eye as to the content and certification. For example, the bestselling 'Call Of Duty' game is rated 16+, and it merits that, it's violent and quite intense.
