Amazon Prime Day is quickly gathering pace as one of the biggest shopping events of the year, and if you haven’t heard of it we’re here to separate fact from fiction and help you nab the best bargains this summer.
This year, Amazon Prime Day is on 15th July. Sales are set to be bigger than ever, with Amazon’s Jeff Wilke confirming huge discounts lasting for a whopping 48 hours – up from 36 hours last year. With just weeks left until the epic two-day parade of non-stop deals, now’s the perfect time to start preparing your plan of attack.
What is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day is the online giant’s annual summer sale event exclusively for Prime members. Expect tens of thousands of prices slashed across tech, toys, furniture and electronics for two days only. The catch? You’ll have to be a Prime member to enjoy these epic discounts, but there is a way you can open a Prime account for free.
Huge discounts will be coming in thick and fast throughout the two-day period, with new deals popping up from every five minutes to every hour. Prime members can also enjoy Amazon’s brand new Lightning Deals feature for the first time. These are huge limited time discounts across top brand household essentials as well as lowest ever prices on Amazon’s own Kindle, Fire, Alexa and Echo smart tech ranges.
When is Amazon Prime Day?
Amazon Prime Day 2019 is on Monday 15th to Tuesday 16th July. This year’s longest ever Prime Day sales will see prices being cut at midnight Pacific time, which is 8am in the UK. Members are promised two full days of the best in shopping, saving and entertainment, with over one million deals around the world.
Thousands of prices will be cut for a limited time or with limited stock, so it goes without saying that bargains get snapped up pretty quickly but the savings are real. Last year saw the customer favourite Echo show home device slashed by 50% (£199.99 to £99.99) and 30% off the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader (£119.99 to £84.99).
Is Amazon Prime Day only for Prime members?
Yes, Prime Day is a sale event exclusively for those signed up to a Prime account.
How to find the best Amazon Prime Day deals
Just like Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, the sheer amount of deals going on in one place can be overwhelming and a little chaotic, which is why we’ve rounded up our top tips to help you bag the best discounts this Amazon Prime Day. Whether you’re after a brand new 4K TV or fancy a new home gadget, exciting savings are just waiting to be discovered if you know where to look.
1. Get a Prime account before the big day
Prime Day is for Amazon Prime members only, so make sure you’ve signed up for a Prime account ahead of time to save on stress and get straight to the discounts as soon as they’re live. Membership costs £79.00 for the year, or £7.99 a month (£95.88 a year).
If you’re thinking about signing up just to get involved with Prime Day, get a free 30-day Prime trial to save money on subscription fees and enjoy the sale extravaganza for free. Remember to cancel your membership before your free trial expires or you’ll be charged.
Students have it even better as they can take advantage of a six-month free trial and enjoy the extra benefits of a Prime membership for even longer after Prime Day is over.
2. Download the Amazon shopping app for sneak previews
The biggest advantage of shopping through the Amazon app is you’ll get exclusive sneak previews of deals before they go live – yes, really! Turn your push notifications on and add upcoming deals to your watch list to get alerts as your favourite deals are about to be launched.
As the first in line to claim the discount the second it goes live, you’ll never miss your favourite deals again. The app is free to download on iOs and Android – simply log in with your Prime account to get started on your deal watch list.
3. Shopping on a desktop? Get the Amazon Assistant chrome extension
If you prefer shopping from a laptop or computer, downloading the official Amazon Assistant chrome plugin before Prime Day is a no-brainer. Like the mobile app, the browser extension notifies you as soon as deals you’re watching go live, so you’ve got no excuse not to snap up the biggest bargains.
It’s well worth keeping the plugin after Prime Day too, as you can compare products while browsing to get the best offers, request order updates in just one click and save your favourites in one place for a fuss-free shop every time.
4. Be alert and check back regularly – new deals will be live as frequently as every five minutes
Amazon is promising phenomenal deals dropping regularly throughout the two-day window, so don’t fret if that new vacuum you’ve had your eye on isn’t on sale immediately. Brand new, exciting price drops will be popping up left, right and centre, so it pays to be patient and prepared. Once you’ve got your alerts and notifications on, snagging your desired bargains should be a breeze.
5. Look out for Lightning Deals
This year, look out for the brand new Lightning Deals – mammoth discounts across top household brands with limited stock that will sell out even faster. The fast-paced nature of these deals mean you’ll have to be quick to snap them up. Stay tuned throughout the 48-hour sale as Lightning Deals will feature eye-watering discounts on the most sought-after products of the year as well as the biggest savings ever on Alexa-enabled devices.
6. Share your Prime benefits with family members
Share your Prime benefits with your family to create an Amazon Household. With more people keeping watch on discounts and deals, you’ll have a higher chance of bagging the best bargains across an even wider range of items. From discounts on the latest consoles to huge deals on home gadgets the whole family can enjoy, get your folks involved to boost your savings.
7. Check other retailers too
Just because items are sale it doesn’t mean that’s the cheapest place you’ll find it. Other retailers might be price matching or may simply have items cheaper due to their own sale events. Use price comparison sites like CamelCamelCamel or PriceRunner to make sure you’re getting the lowest price every time. Remember to factor in any delivery costs if you choose another retailer, as Prime members get free next day delivery with all orders.
What will be discounted on Prime Day?
Judging by last year’s 36-hour sale bonanza, this year’s extended discount frenzy is set to be bigger than ever. 2018’s most popular steals included the TV Fire Stick with Alexa Voice Remote and the Echo Dot. Both dropped to their lowest ever prices, showing it really is worth saving your shopping until Prime Day.
This year, we’re expecting even bigger and better discounts on
- Echo Dot
- TV Fire SticK
- Kindle Oasis
- 4K TVs
- Coffee machines
- Hive thermostats
- Chromebooks and laptops
