What is breast cancer awareness month?

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month – a global health campaign to educate about and prevent against occurences of breast cancer. The month has been recognised as such since 1985, and is associated with the pink ribbon iconography you’ll be seeing popping up in stores, on TV, and just about everywhere this month!

How can I get involved?

Following on from astonishing successes in October 2018 and 2019, the passionate fundraisers here at Savoo have teamed up with Against Breast Cancer for a third time, in order to raise money and awareness! But we’re not going it alone: this year Brastop has joined Savoo to fundraise with every purchase

Brastop is a big advocate of breast health, and so in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 3% of the value of every order placed with Brastop using Savoo’s exclusive 11% discount code will be donated directly to Against Breast Cancer. Not only will you be able to donate money to a great cause, you can grab yourself some comfortable, form-fitting and stylish lingerie, swimwear, sportswear and nightwear.

Breast cancer facts and figures

If your knowledge of breast cancer needs a little fine-tuning, did you know that…

🍈  No matter what you call your chest, boobs, breasts, jugs, or pecs: breast cancer affects women, men and non-binary people.

🍈  Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and the US.

🍈  “Around 55,200 people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK (150 people every day).” – Cancer Research UK

🍈  “15 out of 100 (15%) of all newly diagnosed cancers in the UK are breast cancer.” – Cancer Research UK

🍈  “Left untreated, breast cancer cells may spread and establish secondary breast cancer tumours (made up of breast cells) in other parts of the body.” – Against Breast Cancer

Sadly, around 1000 people every month lose their lives because of breast cancer. This month it’s more important than ever to support breast cancer charities and the amazing work they do, whether that be family support, providing education, funding research, decreasing stigma, or improving the processes of detection and prevention.

Using events and fundraising to pioneer research into treatment and diagnosis, Against Breast Cancer is on a mission to reduce the risks of secondary spread (the primary cause of death for people with breast cancer), and to increase survival rates.

“Ultimately, we want to discover a vaccine against breast cancer,”

Against Breast Cancer

Against Breast Cancer has been working to spread awareness about the importance of early detection, and help to facilitate detection through research projects. In fact…

🍈  Over 95% of those diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer (the earliest stage) survive for at least 5 years after diagnosis

Whereas…

🍈  Around 25% of those diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer (the advanced stage) survive for at least 5 years after diagnosis

Learning how to self-check is an important factor in reducing the likelihood of advanced cancer developing before it is detected. Read on for some simple tips and resources on how you can best get to know your chest.

How to self-check for breast cancer:

  1. Check yourself monthly: It’s important to know what’s normal for you, in order to accurately spot abnormalities!
  2. Factor in environmental circumstances: Your menstrual cycle, breast implants, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all impact the way your chest feels at a given time.
  3. There are plenty of guides online about what you need to LOOK for and FEEL for. These resources are linked below.
  4. If you are over 50, genetically predisposed to breast cancer, or your doctor has recommended them, you should be getting regular mammograms instead of relying on self-checks alone.
