Discover 5 of the top holiday destinations in the world – as voted by travellers.
Are you already dreaming of a destination far, far away?
Me too. In my opinion, it’s never too soon to start planning your next great adventure, luxurious holiday or restful escape.
But it can sometimes be difficult to decide which of the thousands of glorious beaches or cities you should visit first. Which is why we’ve rooted through the Travellers Choice Best Destinations list and picked out five of our favourite holiday destinations for 2016.
If these hot spots don’t have you running for your passport and sunnies we don’t know what will!
Voted #1 Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech was voted the number one Travellers Choice Destination of 2015 and it’s not hard to see why. This magical Medina is made up of narrow streets and winding alleys; each brimming with activity and alive with the hubbub of thriving souks and the smells of spices. Expect to be blown away by colour and Arabian ambiance!
Exploring the majestic red city and its markets, gardens, palaces, and mosques will be top of every travellers list this year.
July and August are the hottest months in Marrakech (37 degrees) so sightseers are advised to visit in spring and autumn.
You can currently book a last minute all-inclusive holiday for 3 nights at Riu Tikida Garden, Marrakech including flights from London Gatwick for £167. If there’s a few of you going, download this free Thomson holidays discount code too and save £40 per person on summer bookings over £1,000.
#2 Hanoi, Vietnam
The charming Vietnamese capital Hanoi has been artfully and masterfully preserved. This city is best known for its colonial architecture which stands defiant amidst the modern developments that have emerged over recent years.
Vietnam’s cities are voted top of the Asian Price of Travel’s Index meaning that they’re among the best destinations for people looking to travel on a budget this year. In Hanoi, you can find food, accommodation and transport for less than you’d pay for lunch in London (if you’re willing to live like a local).
Visit Hanoi to enjoy temples and rich culture as well as beautiful boulevards and modern attractions.
October and November are hailed as the best months to visit Hanoi, as the weather is warm and the skies are clear.
#3 Istanbul, Turkey
Millions of families, couples and lone-wolf travellers flock to Turkey each year owing to its beauty and diversity. If you’re looking to stay in an upmarket resort in a cosmopolitan region try Antalya; if you’re a water sports enthusiast opt for Dalaman and if you’re in search of breath-taking ancient architecture try Istanbul.
This travellers favourite is where Europe meets Asia, and where history meets modern restaurants and nightlife. Istanbul is regularly voted one of the most romantic cities in the world. Visit the city’s mosques to admire their awe-inspiring design before visiting the Grand Bazaar for a taste of a true Turkish market. Be sure to try out the Turkish baths before you leave.
During the summer months (July, August), Turkey can be extremely hot and humid. The best time to visit is in spring (April, May, through mid-June), closely followed by the Autumn months (mid-September through October) when the weather is warm and the chance of rain highly unlikely.
Holiday packages in May start from just £172 per person which includes flights and 7 nights in self-catering apartments just 150 metres from the beach. Check out these Thomas Cook promotional code‘s too – they’re offering up to £400 off summer holiday bookings.
#4 Rome, Italy
Rome most certainly was not built in a day but you’ll discover that for yourself if you opt to visit this travellers favourite this year. You’ll need at least three days to explore this beautiful city and all its famous landmarks, and of course, time to enjoy some of the best food in the world.
Spend at least half a day at the Vatican City and allow at least three hours at the Colosseum. Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and sample Rome’s famous gelato. Visit the Pantheon and the Spanish steps and take the time to enjoy “Il bel far niente” – the beauty of doing nothing.
Rome is magnificent for different reasons at all times of the year. If you’re not afraid of the hot and crowded months visit in June, July or August; otherwise avoid the summer months and risk a little rain. In my opinion, nothing can really dampen the beauty of this city.
Flight Centre is currently offering last minute holidays and weekends in Rome from just £219 (2 nights in 3* Hotel Giorgi and return flights from London Heathrow). View all Flight Centre deals.
#5 Bangkok, Thailand
Definitely one for the bucket list; Bangkok is a must-visit Travellers’ Choice Destination and one of my all-time favourite capital cities. No other city is quite as alive as Bangkok. It’s the city that never sleeps and a place where golden palaces and floating markets meet 6 star hotels and enormous shopping malls.
River boats, longtail boats and tuk tuks will be your primary means of transport and price negotiations are just a part of everyday life. Tuck in to authentic Asian street food in China Town and visit The Grand Palace, Wat Arun and Wat Pho temples.
Generally, December is the best time to visit Thailand as average temperatures sit at around 32 degrees and you should escape any heavy rain.
