It goes without saying that Mums are incredible. But while Mum may make it seem effortless, women across the UK face unseen difficulties as partners, mothers, and as members of society that can be damaging to the mental and physical health of both mums and their children.
This year, we aim to support those mothers who need it most on Mother’s Day by teaming up with nine sponsors to pull off our biggest giveaway yet and raise money for Women’s Aid. While the widely reported unpaid household chores discrepancy has balanced out to a more even divide since the 60’s, in reality the “super mum” from those Mother’s Day adverts still does 60% more housework than her partner, according to the ONS! And while stats seem to indicate a society where equality is drawing closer, in recent years a new style of housework has been identified, known colloquially as “worry work”.
Worry work sounds just as exhausting as it is – this consists of listing chores, and ensuring they are completed on time (no matter who carries out their completion). Things like planning the week’s lunchboxes, overseeing kids’ homework, or signing up for after-school classes all fall under the umbrella of worry work.
Women’s paid work hours were even found to have increased when the number of children’s out of school activities decreased, while men’s paid hours were not impacted by the activities of their children.
So while Mothers may get the rare chance to put their feet up on Mother’s Day, the completion of household tasks is still largely influenced by the unpaid work of women and mothers.
Does that mean single-parent households are off the hook? Well, no. When it comes to single parenting, an astonishing 90% of single-parent households were found to be run by women. And although single mothers are just as likely to be in work as women without children, single parents earn a devastating 27% less than other families. In fact, one in three children in working single-parent households are living in poverty. Due to this, nearly 30% of single parents have reported having problems with their mental health.
Even more worrying, women made up 77% of all victims of domestic abuse in 2019. Domestic abuse is proven to increase suicidal ideation in victim-survivors, as well as being detrimental to the wellbeing of the children involved in these situations.

That’s where Women’s Aid comes in. Working with women and children to educate, inform and assist them to get out of bad domestic situations, Women’s Aid campaigns, influences policy and funds research that changes the lives of women and children across the UK for the better.
