The Silver Line is the free and confidential helpline for older people open 24-hours a day, every single day and night of the year. The helpline offers a friendly chat, listening ear, information and advice to lonely and isolated older people.

The Silver Line was founded by Dame Esther Rantzen in November 2013 to help tackle the epidemic of loneliness in the older population.

Did you know...

  • The Silver Line has already taken over 1 million calls from lonely and isolated older people

  • Half of over 75s live alone and one in ten older people say they suffer “intense loneliness"

  • Two-thirds of older people say that the TV is their main form of company

  • A simple chat on the phone really can be transformational. As one caller told us,

“When I get off the phone I feel like I belong to the human race again."

What makes The Silver Line different

We are the only helpline for older people open 24 hours a day. 70% of our calls occur at evenings and weekends when few other services are available for older people.

Other ways to support

Become a Silver Line Friend: We have recruited and trained 3000 volunteers who make a weekly call or write a letter to the same older person each week. It only takes a 30-minute commitment each week to transform an older person's life.
