Handmade Organic Skin Masks

The summer's sun is preparing to set, leaving us with the return of morning fog and rainy days. While Helios may still be driving his chariot across our sky, I for one am about ready for the change - at least, my skin is. This summer was filled with enough heat and festival fun to leave my face parched, as well as my chest, back and every other patch of skin not covered from those killer UV rays. There may be more fun to be had and I will have my share but I decided to take this upcoming Sunday to pamper my epidermis. Once upon a time I would just have taken a day or weekend at the spa, and while there are some amazing deals out there, playing a kitchen scientist sounded more fun and economical. There are some great ways to cleanse and pamper your skin using what you already have in your home or even garden.

New iPods and Buying Advice

At their Autumn 2010 event, Apple spent a good amount of time introducing their new collection of iPods. Nearly their entire line, from the miniscule iPod Shuffle, to the flagship iPod Touch, has been revamped in some form or another. The Shuffle’s form factor now returns to the familiar clip shaped design of two generations ago, while the Nano has been markedly reduced in size and features a small multi-touch display with over 24 hours of battery life. The iPod Touch, meanwhile, has received both front and rear facing cameras, along with support for the company’s FaceTime software, adapted from the iPhone 4. Before you run off and pre-order your new mp3 player, however, you may want to keep the following money saving tips in mind:

Mutiny Was Not Part of the Plan

It’s been almost a month since I added a new puppy to the household. The first week, my dog Maxine wasn’t too happy. I tried telling her that the furry white thing with brown spots was a new companion for her. I told her to think of it as a living toy, something to keep her from getting bored as I typed away on my keyboard all day. Instead she got stuffy, growled, snapped at, and at times, ignored the spotted mutt, expecting it to leave soon enough. Of course that hasn’t happened. Not only have I committed myself to her financially, but my heart gets a little gooey when I look at the sweet little, growing darling. The deal was sealed once I named her McQueen, after Alexander McQueen, whose daring influence on fashion I will miss greatly. Like Alexander, she is very unique and has started growing big fast. Maxine has settled down into not just acceptance, but it may be fair to say, love. They play tug of war with tiny sticks, cuddle together for naps, wrestle and share in a language that I don’t understand.

Save Money and Pretend To Be The Stig

Since it appears as if my makeup and fashion tips haven’t exactly gone over well, I’ve decided that I’d go ahead and stick with talking about things like Top Gear and The Stig. Which is okay, because in the future when I come up with fantastic tips like using permanent marker as hair dye, I’ll just keep them to myself, thanks. In any case, it turns out that Ben Collins is The Stig after all. Though we’d pretty much passed this unconfirmed knowledge as fact last week, that it actually turned out to be true has left us in a bit of shock. I mean, The Stig is a normal human being? Frankly, we’re shocked. For all we knew, he was a robot sent to Earth by an alien civilization purely for our entertainment. So, to help you cope with this new found knowledge that The Stig is in fact just a regular person, and because this is the best transition I could come up with, here are some ways to pretend you too are a tame racing driver, and save money while you’re at it:

Makeup, Fashion, and Men

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that the readers of the Savoo blog are far more interested in makeup and fashion than technology and gaming, which is completely fine, I suppose. However, this does present a bit of a problem for me. As a male blogger (and this may come as something of a shock to you), I haven’t the least bit of knowledge about makeup or fashion. The difference between eye shadow and eye liner is lost on me, though presumably one shadows the eye and one lines it. Unfortunately, my startling ignorance makes it that much harder for me to contribute anything of value to a discussion about either subject. But, what I can offer is a man’s perspective, which I’ve been told counts for something. Of course, I may have been the one to tell that to myself, but that’s irrelevant. The point is, I’m here to offer you these wholly unsolicited tips on how to save money on makeup and fashion.

2010 Makeup Trends

The first time I can remember putting on makeup and and wearing it to school was in third grade. Mum had an early work appointment, leaving me home alone with her mysterious make-up drawer. While she had allowed me to rummage through it previously as I played dress up with my sister and friends, never had I walked out of the house in full face paint; after all I was only nine. Yet I loved the stuff and that day was one I had been waiting a long time for. Tip-toeing my way into her bathroom, I gently pulled open the drawer, taking in the sight and smells of a collection she had built through her marriage, two children, and various would-be careers. The sweet odor of pressed powder drifted to my nose, mixing with tiny bottles of perfume too small to sit on the counter. Being 1985, the range of colours in each separate compartment was staggering. I picked up a brush and got to work. Unfortunately this crime was too perfect, so I have no pictures to share, but I can assure you that I walked out the front door with screamingly red lips, shocking pink cheeks, and the most brilliant blue eyes you've ever saw. Though nobody said anything to me I'm sure I was a clownish mess. Of course I didn't feel that way, I felt gorgeous. Thankfully, as time has passed, I have read many magazines, taken numerous make-up classes for stage, film, print, and daily use, studied fashion models, and befriended make-up artists. I now have my own treasured make-up drawer, and I have this blog.

It’s been a dizzying several days for car lovers throughout the UK. An undercover investigation by BBC news revealed that 87% of our local car garages miss simple mechanical faults when inspecting our cars, problems sometimes as simple as tyre pressure and brake fluid levels. Then, we received word that The Stig, the silent and mysterious racecar driver of Top Gear fame, might in fact be former racer Ben Collins. This in particular was a startling blow, as The Stig’s identity remaining secret was perhaps the one constant we all had to hang on to in a climate of increasing uncertainty. All any of us knew for certain in life was that The Stig had a life sized tattoo of his face on his face, and that he thought the credit crunch was a new breakfast cereal. And now, we don’t even have that.

2010 Autumn/Winter Fashion Trends

May I be the first to stand up and thank the powers that be for returning to the beauty of the female form? As a luscious lady of the hour glass myself, I have always found the fashions from the 50's and 60's to be greatly appealing. It's astounding how taking in a waist line to make it seem tiny can pull a mans eyes to all the right places; the delicate curve of a ladies calf, the full hips, strong shoulders, and of course, the blossoming bosom. Retro is in vogue again, and it's enough to make a girl whirl and twirl with glee. For those of you who aren't as inclined to wear skirts, there are some lovely offerings with a much more contemporary feel to them. Long camel trench coats layered over high waisted pants call up images of the newly independent 70's woman, while models marched down runways in short cropped aviator style shearling jackets proclaiming the power of the military. Whichever era you prefer, one thing is certain: boyish androgyny is out, and the curves of a woman are in.

Here at Savoo, we like to think that our team has generally good taste in music. While we hold no grudges against anyone we find listening to Justin Bieber on their iPod, you’re not very likely to catch any of us doing so. Still, we understand that although everyone likes music, not everyone necessarily has the same taste in it. So, as much as we’d enjoy trading music recommendations with you, there’s a reasonable chance that any efforts in that regard would be pretty useless. However, there are a number of free services you can use to help discover new artists, bands, or songs. Here are some of the best:

Windows Phone 7 and Early Adoption

It’s always nice to be the first among your friends to have whatever fancy new gadget has just been released. You get to relish in the attention of everyone crowding around you as you show off the myriad of features your device is bound to have. While that’s all good and well, the price of this recognition often comes at a steep cost: As one of the first to own an item, you also tend to become one of the first people to discover its flaws. While these are typically minor quirks that can easily be overlooked, other times they can be a bit more crippling (not to beat a dead horse, but the iPhone 4’s antenna issues are a prime example of this). That said, we’re not entirely sold on the forthcoming Windows Phone 7 mobile platform being released by Microsoft.

Life's Biggest Little Change - Part Two

The introduction of a baby into one's world is life altering, to say the least. It changes not only your outlook on life, but also your day to day schedule, financial decisions, travel plans, living arrangements, and disrupts your social life. In short, a child changes everything. For most of human history, women have stayed home to tend to the raising of the children while the men went out and found means to provide for the family. It wasn't until the women's movement that the option of career first, children second really came into play. Before that, it was rare that a woman that did not have a family, whatever the reason. Generation X'ers were taught that anything is possible. Girls in particular were finally given schooling, athletic, and work options that hadn't been available to them before. These new possibilities have opened a world of expectations and opportunities that many of us are struggling to navigate. In part one of this two piece article, I introduced you to Courtney Welch, a successful career woman days away from the delivery of her first child. In part two I am going to talk to a woman on the other side of that equation.

Me, Maxine, and a Puppy Makes Three

We all need companionship; it's human nature. While most of us would like to be in love, or at least have a partner, there is a whole pool of single ladies and blokes fending off loneliness. I am coming clean and letting you know that I include myself in that group. True, I have chums to visit pubs or take in the latest show with, but in my flat, it's just me. Well, I do have a companion and flatmate here, with four legs, lots of fur, and a lopped off tail. My dog Maxine helps fill those hours without human comfort. Over the past month I have noticed Maxine herself is getting bored and depressed. Maybe I have only now been able to see that as I have just started working from home. Whatever the case, I decided that Maxine could use a companion of her own. Thus, another four legged creature covered in fur and wagging a tail made its way here.

Though we’ve been having a bit of good-natured fun at Apple’s expense as of late, we legitimately think that they put out a lot of nice products. It goes without saying that the iPhone has been a major player in the smartphone industry, with a high adoption rate and almost universal praise. However, they might soon have some legitimate concerns to tend to. In addition to recent news indicating that the market share of Google’s Android OS had surpassed that of Apple’s iOS, they now have to contend with the announcement that Sony is planning to bring its PlayStation to Android 3.0.

Now that the long awaited release of StarCraft II has come and gone, you’re probably going to need something else to occupy your time. Assuming you’ve managed to work your way through the single player campaign (and, in our opinion, the terrible voice acting /writing) already, anyway. So with the release of Halo: Reach still over a month away, how are you going to kill that time?

Have you been taking care of your hair this summer? While sea washed, sun dried hair might look super sexy, all that salt and sand can really take a toll on your lovely tresses. Add in some wind with a little (or a lot) of humidity, and your lion's mane can turn into a scarecrow's stuffing, leaving you needing to de-tangle the straw sticking off of your head. With just a few simple steps, you can avoid some of the damage and keep your hair from turning into a dry, life-less, frizzy mass of split ends.

At the company’s new flagship store in Covent Garden, London, thousands of people stood in queue to be among the select few who would receive a shirt commemorating the store’s opening date and location.

I think it's safe to say that many women are made to feel that motherhood isn't as much of an option as it is a duty, even if it's not something they really want to experience. Generation X-ers occupy a unique place in history, one that often leaves both men and women confused about big life decisions. As a woman, it seems to me that most of our anxiety stems from deciding which path to follow. Do you get married right out of secondary school? Go straight to University, then settle for marriage or go on to a career? Skip marriage altogether and find a partner? Have a career for 10-15 years then have a baby? Have a baby and no career? Try to have a baby AND have a career? Stay single for the career? We have so many more options open to us than our mothers did thanks to the Women's Movement, but that can also be overwhelming. I talked to two Generation X women to understand their positions on the whole baby issue. One is a successful career woman who is weeks away from having her first baby. The other has a growing career and has chosen to stay childless.

There’s been word that Microsoft’s forthcoming Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) is a substantial leap forward from the previous iterations of the company’s standard web browser. To this, we respond that it’s about time. IE9 has long been criticized for its lack of adherence to web standards, security vulnerabilities, and overall unimpressive speed, especially compared to free counterparts such as Mozilla’s popular Firefox browser, and Google’s Chrome. However, news about IE9 has leaked, which states that the browser now scores a 95 on the Acid3 CSS test, and has expanded HTML5 support.

With school soon starting, there’s certainly a more than reasonable chance that many of you are looking to purchase or have just recently purchased a new computer. If that’s the case, you’ll probably have noticed that your computer is missing some essential pieces of software, such as Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, and a quality antivirus program. Purchasing copies of these programs new can cost upwards of several hundred pounds, making that a rather pricey option, especially for students.

August brings sweltering heat and new shoes to love.

With the summer sun scorching down on us, the beginning of August seems like a mixed blessing. Though the week is set to start off with rain falling throughout the UK, I am aware that we have more heat coming our way and I am not ready to pack up my sandals in favor of my wellies just yet. One of the blessings August brings are all the end of summer sales taking place. My gladiator sandals aren't looking so fabulous anymore, although I guess two festivals and running around the underground will do that to thin leather straps. Until now, though I wasn't ready to invest in another pair, and as much as I love a new pair of heels with each dress, this economy has hampered my fashionista rituals greatly. With stores stocking up for Back to School and being under their own pressure from a hard economy, the early sales have brought deep discounts with them.

As we noted in our previous post, being a gamer can be hard on the wallet. With new releases often priced somewhere in the neighbourhood of £35 and £40, every new title is a considerable investment. That said, however, it’s still entirely possible to find ways to waste your time playing games (let’s be honest, gaming isn’t exactly an activity you’d call productive) without breaking the bank.
