There have been many stories in the tabloids about people who save money using vouchers, mulitbuys, discounts and other smart ways to reduce the everyday cost of living. You've probably seen people who have stockpiled their spare bedroom with enough loo rolls to last a year or two or maybe know a few people who spend hours cutting out 10p coupons from the local free ads.

Well, here at Savoo, we are firm believers in the old adage 'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves', which is why we've launched the search for the UK's smartest shopper. We're not talking about super scrimping tips like re-using teabags. We 're looking for an altruistic 'someone' who is passionate about saving money and equally passionate about sharing that knowledge with other people.

Of course, the prize isn't too shabby either. The winner will not only receive a hefty £10,000 but he or she will also have the opportunity to work with us to create an award winning, money saving blog.

But She Has A Pretty Face!

I am an adamant follower of a blog by a woman who started writing about her adventures raising a guide dog turned family pet. Her dog failed the guide dog test when they realised that she loved to interact with other dogs too much, which can be dangerous for a handicapped owner. Instead of ending her blog when her dog changed "careers," she continued to write about all the animals she fosters in her own loving home.

Fostering an animal from the shelter is one of the most kindhearted and selfless things that a person can do. Recently, she took in an enormous cat from her local shelter because it was not thriving in that environment. This cat loves food so much that it literally sat on top of the food bowls to prevent others from eating it! When I saw pictures of this nutty overweight cat whose fat tummy almost brushed the floor when it moved, I could not control my laughter. After I finally got over my giggling fit, I sank back to reality and remembered the hard road ahead for both foster mum and cat. While there is a lot of humourous aspects of a really overweight cat, we must also see that behind the rolls of fat is a very unhappy and unhealthy feline.

National Sewing Machine Day

'A stitch in time saves nine' is a famous saying of many nans from around the world. The fact is though, this isn't just a saying… it's the truth. If the hem of my skirt was coming down or a sock needed darning, my Nan, sure enough would be the one for the job.

But, I've grown up, moved away and no longer have my Nan at hand to fix my hems and darn my socks. Along with many other people, I've become accustomed to just 'buying' everything new, the first sign of a hole or loose stitch, it's gone – replaced with a newer and shinier model. But things need to change; just last week the Guardian Newspaper reported that the UKs disposable income will fall for the third year in a row and that wage growth is 'disappointingly anaemic'. With a spiralling out of control food bill and fuel costs that have sky rocketed, now more than ever, it is important to 'make do and mend '.

DIY Dog Collars

My mate purchases new custom made dog collars for her spoiled pups just about every three months. Bella has had the same dog collar since she turned two and stopped growing, which means she's had the same pink collar for over three years. In fact, I think we only switched her out from her puppy collar to her adult one because it was a Christmas gift from my mum.

Fido on the Furniture

Every night while my husband and I are lying in bed, I hear him ask, "Can the baby be up here?" Of course, he means our spoiled dog as we don't have an actual human protegee yet - we can discuss our strange parenting ideas later in another post. I was the one who taught Bella how to snuggle comfortably right in my arms but the fur that remains on our sheets long after she hops off disgusts me. I can't tell you how many times I've had a strand of her fur stuck to my lips or even in between my teeth. Yuck!

Bella is also allowed on our white couch while we watch television. It's so nice to have her next to me on a chilly night. Pets are such perfect company, aren't they? But every now and then dirt from her paws make marks on the clean  cushions while drool from her sleepy snout slips through as well. Thank goodness we had the foresight to get couch cushions with removable and washable covers or we would be saving up for a new couch by now.
