In 1884 a Russian Polish refugee called Michael Marks opened a stall selling everything for a penny including nails, soap, screws and luggage labels. He moved to Manchester in 1893 and opened a shop with a sign saying 'Admission Free' to encourage people to come in and browse. During the 50s the company introduced an exchange and refund policy, and the first ever petite range of clothing for women. During the 70s, Marks and Spencer introduced sell by dates, frozen foods, wine, and Chinese and Indian foods. Christmas Hampers were introduced during the 80s, along with furniture products, and opened their first store in Hong Kong. The Marks and Spencer website was launched in 1999, allowing customers to purchase a substantial range of products online. At the turn of the century, they launched the Autograph range of womenswear, followed two years later by the Blue Harbour casual wear range for men. 2003 saw the launch of the M&S Cook range, and the introduction of the rewards program. Last year Marks and Spencer became the first retailer to remove all artificial colours from its entire food and soft drinks range.
