About Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer funds research into new treatments while also providing tools for earlier diagnosis and advice to reduce the risk of recurrence and secondary spread. The charity was founded by Dr Anthony Leathem and his wife Patricia, who had first-hand experience of the condition as a breast cancer theatre nurse. Today, with awareness of breast cancer more widespread, Against Breast Cancer funds research projects to the value of £4 million.
Much of Against Breast Cancer's research focuses on preventing secondary spread, the leading cause of breast cancer-related deaths. Secondary breast cancer is when cancer cells that originate in the breast spread to another part of the body, and at present, it cannot be cured, only controlled. The charity has a fellowship programme that supports and develops young scientists who go on to conduct innovative research into increasing survival rates after a breast cancer diagnosis.
