The best Father’s Day Gift Ideas and support Orchid men’s charity for Men’s Health Week

The Big Father's Day Giveaway Supporting Orchid men's cancer charity

It’s widely known that men are less likely to seek support for health-related issues, whether failing to book physical health checks with the GP or finding it difficult to talk openly about mental health. Society expectations and gender roles have played a damaging role in perpetuating men as the dominant providers within a family unit – often the cause for not speaking up or wanting to appear ‘weak’ when their health isn’t at its best.

This year, we’re supporting men’s health by encouraging everyone to take some time speaking to their dads in a bid to advocate for the importance of talking openly about health-related issues. Men’s Health Week occurs from June 13th to 19th each year to coincide with Father’s Day, raising awareness for men’s mental health and why we need to see some crucial change in the way men communicate how they’re thinking and feeling.

For Father’s Day 2022, Savoo are teaming up with nine sponsors to pull off a big giveaway in support of Orchid Cancer – a men’s charity existing to save the lives of those battling testicular, prostate and penile cancer. We’ll be making a matching donation to the prize value of our nine gifts and donating 5% of our sales commission from the nine brands below between now and June 19th. Beyond the Father’s Day freebies, we’re also here to help you discover the perfect affordable Father’s Day gift ideas with discount codes from Savoo!

We couldn’t think of a more vital time to raise awareness for the work and support offered by Orchid Cancer. According to the Men’s Health Forum, between 2019 – 2020 alone, early-stage cancer diagnoses fell by a third in the first lockdown, while prostate cancer diagnoses were down 29% due to GP appointments and visits dropping during lockdown periods. While physical health remains a growing concern for men, mental health problems similarly go without treatment or support.

Roughly one in eight men in England has a common mental health problem, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although men only make up 36% of referrals to NHS talking services and psychological therapies – indicating a clear disparity between health issues faced and professional support sought by men.

In conventional society, dads are often the ones to work while mums, more typically, tend to stay at home. While these gender roles play a detrimental role in shaping women’s position in society, 191,000 men, on average, report stress, depression or anxiety caused or made worse by work each year. Carrying the pressure of providing for a family or acting as the sole breadwinner means the workplace is a key factor impacting men’s mental health. Although efforts to de-stigmatise mental health have come a long way in recent years, stats show that we still have so much more work to do in reaching a stage where mental health is considered a legitimate health-related concern. While 34% of men claimed they would be embarrassed or ashamed to take time off work for their mental health, only 13% said they would feel the same taking time off for a physical injury.

Most of us have heard the staggering fact that almost 3 in 4 suicides are by men, making up 75% and becoming the biggest cause of death for men under 50. While substantial change is due surrounding how we encourage men to communicate and take their health more seriously, we can all do our bit this Father’s Day and Men’s Health Week by consciously setting aside time to talk to our dads and the men close to us.

With that in mind, we believe that all dads deserve a great gift this Father’s Day, but knowing what to treat our dads to is an undoubtedly tricky task. Whether they respond with their usual ‘nothing’ when it’s time to discuss gifts, or they appear to have everything they need and want – ensure your dad gets a pressie they’ll love with the help of Savoo this Father’s Day.
