How did Black Friday start?

Black Friday originated in the US where Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The following day has been recognised as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season since the 1950s. It’s believed that the term ‘Black Friday’ was first coined in Philadelphia in the 1960s by police officers who were frustrated by the heavy traffic caused by shoppers on the hunt for pre-Christmas bargains in store sales.

However, in the early 1980s it is said that businesses began to push back on the negative images painted of Black Friday and so began circulating their own positive explanation to how the name of America’s biggest shopping event came about. Their alternative interpretation stated that the ‘black’ in Black Friday refers to the fact that it’s the day of the year that businesses begin to see a profit for the year – also known as being ‘in the black’.

Despite originating across the pond, the Black Friday phenomenon found its way further afield in 2013, gaining popularity with seasoned bargain hunters in the UK. Black Friday in the US is still huge - with American shoppers spending a record $5 billion in 24 hours last year. Recently the biggest shopping event of the year has increasingly taken place online, with hundreds of top brands offering bigger and better exclusive online discounts each year.
