Black Friday started in the US, and while the official start date is disputed it’s always been the fourth Friday of November and the day directly after Thanksgiving. A lot of people say ‘black’ refers to businesses finally making profit for the year and hence being in the black rather than the red. Others say the term was started by police officers showing their frustration for heavy traffic in the cities as people rushed to start their Christmas shopping.
Cyber Monday is the following Monday after Black Friday and sees even more deals and discounts at your favourite online brands. That’s the key difference - Cyber Monday is only online. You can find all the best Cyber Monday deals over on our sister site CyberMondayDeals.co.uk.

How did Black Friday start?
Black Friday originated in the US where Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The following day has been recognised as the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season since the 1950s. It’s believed that the term ‘Black Friday’ was first coined in Philadelphia in the 1960s by police officers who were frustrated by the heavy traffic caused by shoppers on the hunt for pre-Christmas bargains in store sales.
However, in the early 1980s it’s said that businesses began to push back on the negative images painted of Black Friday and so began circulating their own positive explanation to how the name of America’s biggest shopping event came about. Their alternative interpretation stated that the ‘black’ in Black Friday refers to the fact that it’s the day of the year that businesses begin to see a profit for the year – also known as being ‘in the black’.
Despite originating across the pond the Black Friday phenomenon has found its way further afield, gaining popularity with seasoned bargain hunters in the UK in 2013. Black Friday in the US is still huge - with American shoppers spending a record $5 billion in 24 hours last year. In recent years, what’s become the biggest shopping event of the year is increasingly becoming more and more of an online concept with hundreds of top brands offering bigger and better online exclusive discounts every year.
