Mum’s the Word: Mother’s Day Gift Guide

mothers day gift guide banner

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, falling this year on Sunday 22nd March. That means it’s time to show your mama some love and appreciation with a little something that says “thanks for putting up with me.”

That said, just because you want to show your mum you care doesn’t mean you have to break the bank. After all, you can appreciate mum while also appreciating a good deal. That’s why we’ve put together a budget-friendly Mother’s Day gift guide to help you find the perfect, unique present to make her smile without spending a fortune.

How much should we spend on Mother’s Day gifts?

It’s hard to know how much is the right amount to spend on your mum. Is £20 too little, is £50 too much? Well, we’re here to help. We did a little research and found out that in 2019 spending on Mother’s Day rose to a whopping 1.6 billion, up 0.8% from 2018. However, despite people continuing to spend, 72.8% agreed that the occasion has become too commercial, with 25.3% of consumers feeling financially worse off and so less willing to splash out.

Interestingly, men were found to spend an average of £12.18 more than women for their Mother’s Day gifts. In general, men spent around £41.15 while women spent £28.97. However, more women bothered to get gifts at all, with 62% of daughters buying presents while only 57% of men did. In fact, the most popular Mother’s Day gift was a visit to mum as its cheaper and easier than splashing out on a pricey gift or activity.

So despite 83.9% of consumers believing Mother’s Day is still an important occasion to celebrate, the emphasis isn’t on spending a fortune on an expensive gift. Instead, it’s more about spending time with mum and giving her a little something to show you care while still sticking to a budget. Check out our infographic later on in the post to find out more about how the UK spends during Mother’s Day.

Top Mother’s Day gifts for any budget

With these findings in mind, this year we’ve created a Mother’s Day gift guide featuring three guides sorted by budget. Whether you’re feeling a little strapped for cash and need something under £25, are willing to go a little higher for something in the £25 – £50 region or are happy to blow the budget and spend more on something which is worth the money, you’re sure to find something to suit you. So take a closer look and see what takes your fancy.

As an added bonus, for every purchase made from the featured brands until Sunday 17th March you’ll be raising free donations for Save the Children, NCT and Alzheimer’s Research UK. Plus, read on to find out about your chance to win your favourite gift from our gift guides with this year’s Mother’s Day giveaway

Budget-friendly gifts under £25

Why spend a fortune when your mum will only tell you not to spend your money on her anyway? After all, she’d much rather see you, and it’s the simple things in life which make her smile. How about a personalised hardcover photobook full of treasured memories from Optimalprint? Upload all her favourite photos of you growing up, holidays together or maybe even photos of you and the grandkids! For less than £10 you can really brighten up her day.

Or why not help her relax after a long day? She can put up her feet in these lavender-scented Warmies Hot Boots from IWOOT and enjoy a cuppa in her personalised, pink roses mug from Emma Bridgewater. She can even create an at-home spa experience with her Rio Scent Aroma Diffuser and Humidifier for some mood lighting and the soothing scents of natural essential aromatherapy oils.

If your mum would rather be out in the garden than putting her feet up inside, she’ll love this unique Acorn bird feeder from B&Q. Attract wonderful wildlife to her garden so she can watch the blue tits and robins as she’s planting some new springtime blooms with her beautiful V&A Leicester Print Fork and Trowel from Anthropologie.

Gifts between £25 and £50

If you’ve got a little more stretch in the budget but still don’t want to go overboard, our second gift guide is the one for you. Featuring gifts between £25 and £50, you still have plenty of choice for what to treat your mum to.

How about afternoon tea for two? BuyAGift’s Afternoon Tea Smartbox gift experience allows you to choose from hundreds of top UK locations for you and your mum to enjoy some of the finer things in life – and all for under £40.

If your mum prefers her own baking, why not opt for Not On The High Street’s Personalised Name Wooden Recipe Box? This gorgeous handmade wooden box is the perfect place for her to record all her signature recipes in style, and can even be personalised by engraving her name and a special message on the back. There’s nothing quite like mum’s Victoria Sponge – it deserves to be celebrated!

Or if you want a classic gift, you can’t go wrong with Bloom & Wild’s stunning Harper and Handcream bundle. Send her a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers along with some Cowshed hand cream for a special surprise. Maybe she’d prefer the hand cream over the flowers – in that case, let her pamper herself with Darphin’s Ultimate Botanical Indulgence Gift Set. It’s jam-packed with full-size luxury skincare to suit all types of skin. From the 8-Flower Nectar Elixir to the Chamomile Intral Toner, she can upgrade her skincare routine with some of the best natural skincare products around.

Blow the budget

Or maybe you’d rather go big for your mama – and who can blame you? She’s awesome. But just because you’re going big doesn’t mean you can’t still get a good deal. Our ‘Blow the Budget’ gift guide features pricier gifts over the £50 mark – but even though you’re paying a bit more, you’re still getting excellent value for money. Snap up gifts worth up to £250 for a bargain price with our money-saving deals.

How about a Lavazza coffee machine? Thanks to their Mother’s Day deals, you can save £44 on the Desea bundle. This includes a luxury Desea coffee machine, along with 10 complimentary packs of A Modo Mio Eco Caps of your choice, a free glass mug and free delivery on your order – so your mum can enjoy her favourite coffee in style!

For mums who love a little luxury, pick up the Lookfantastic Mother’s Day Collection. It’s packed with full-sized products from top brands like ESPA, Aurelia and NEOM to help your mum look and feel amazing. The best bit? Even though it’s worth £250, it can be yours for just £59. She’s also bound to love The Royal Mint’s stunning sterling silver necklace with oak leaves and acorn detailing which you can get for £91 – saving you £39 off the retail price.

With so many fabulous gifts to choose from, you really can’t go wrong. So which one do you think mum will like best?
