Youth Music

We’re Youth Music, a national charity investing in music-making projects for children and young people experiencing challenging circumstances. We believe everyone should have the chance to make music.

For young people facing difficult challenges - living with illness or disability, dealing with substance abuse or mental health issues, overcoming communication difficulties, caring for a relative, in trouble with the law, or excluded from school and society - music can be one of the many things they miss out on. Yet they’re often the ones who get the most out of music-making.

Did you know...

Each year more than 350 Youth Music projects are happening across England. That’s around 75,000 children and young people regularly making music. But there are so many more that we’re not yet able to reach. Right now, we can only invest in around one third of the projects that apply to us for funding.

Last year there were 2,041 music leaders, project managers and youth workers, 723 trainees and 1,342 volunteers who helped bring Youth Music projects to life.

What makes Youth Music different

Young people take the lead in Youth Music projects. They’re given opportunities to choose what and how they want to learn. Many go on to mentor other children, or to train as project leaders themselves. Sessions are collaborative and inclusive, with music leaders encouraging and inspiring young people to learn at their own pace and in a way that best suits them.

We ensure that every child gets the chance to take part, whatever their circumstances. Each young person is treated as an individual and encouraged to explore their own passions as well as discovering new interests.

Other ways to support

We know our supporters love music. So what better way to help transform the lives of young people than by putting on a live music event in support of Youth Music? Visit www.giveagig.org.uk for more information.

And if you’re up for a challenge, why not run, cycle, swim, sky-dive, abseil or bungee jump for Youth Music? Don’t worry if sport’s not your thing: you could always consider a karaoke marathon, a 24-hour guitar solo or even a sponsored sing. Let us know what you’re planning and we’ll support you all the way: www.youthmusic.org.uk/do-something
