It’s fair to say the last few years have been a bumpy ride for mental health. From pandemic lockdowns to the cost of living crisis, Mental Health Awareness Week is as crucial now as it has ever been. The theme of this year’s event is loneliness, with a special focus on supporting the most isolated people in society. Loneliness is a very personal experience, meaning that everyone’s experience of it will be different. The need for rewarding social contact and relationships is a critical part of the human condition, but for many loneliness is not always the same as being alone. While feeling lonely isn't in itself a mental health problem, there is compelling evidence that the two are strongly linked.

About Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week provides a yearly reminder that mental health is essential and that those living with mental health issues are deserving of our understanding, care, compassion, and pathways to hope, healing, recovery and ultimately a fulfilled life. As an annual event hosted by Mental Health Foundation, Mental Health Awareness Week has grown to be one of the largest awareness weeks across the globe. Into its 22nd year, the week is now rightfully a permanent fixture in the calendar.

Here are some of the ways you can participate in Mental Health Awareness Week:

  • During the Mental Health Awareness Week you can use the hashtag #IveBeenThere to share supporting experiences of loneliness and give the campaign momentum.
  • Get active and sign up to walk, run or job as part of the 80 Miles in May challenge and share your photos using #80MilesinMay and #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek.

Loneliness deserves more attention, so it’s great that it’s taking centre stage during this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week. The condition affects millions of people across the UK, with long-term loneliness being closely linked to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

"Millions of us experience loneliness from time to time. We know that some people are at higher risk of experiencing loneliness and the evidence shows the longer we feel lonely, the more we are at risk of mental health problems." - Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation.
