The last few years have been an extremely challenging time for the mental health of the nation. From the pandemic through to the cost of living crisis, it seems like there isn’t a week that has gone by which hasn’t tested the emotional state of many people in society. Mental Health Awareness week is an opportunity to shine a light on the issue, with a particular focus on loneliness this year.

Having family and friends to talk to is one of the key things which can help people feel less isolated. Findmypast is all about connecting families and taking people on a journey of discovery. Sharing your family history is one way of opening up a conversation with a like-minded group of individuals. Findmypast From Home livestreams on Facebook and YouTube have proved to be a powerful tool for their community, especially during the lockdown period.

What is Mental Health Awareness Week?

Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event hosted by the Mental Health Foundation. The event was launched 21 years ago to de-stigmatise and highlight the importance of good mental health, which hasn't always been accepted as a viable cause for poor well-being and understood to the degree it now is. Today the event has become one of the biggest awareness weeks to take place in the UK and across the globe. Each year a theme is attached to the event, and this year it’s loneliness.

Loneliness is a large contributing factor to many mental issues, and it’s something that is increasingly impacting all of us. Even outside of the pandemic lockdown which made things worse, life has become more secular. There are whole sections of society who are on the outskirts, believing they are trapped with nobody to turn to. But it is possible to break the stigma and play a part in the movement to tackle loneliness.

About Mental Health Foundation

The Mental Health Foundation has been the UK’s leading mental health charity since 1949. Championing good mental health for all and with prevention at the forefront of everything they do, the Mental Health Foundation supports communities, families and individuals to live mentally healthier lives. With a special focus on those at the greatest risk in society, the charity empowers people to take control of and manage their own mental health.

Instead of being a mental health service provider for when people are unwell, Mental Health Foundation instead takes the community and peer programmes route to evaluate the best approach to take in advance. With prevention being the key, they also conduct research, offer advice to millions of people and propose lasting change to organisations like local councils and schools.

There are lots of ways you can get involved in the great work they do.Find out more about the Mental Health Foundation
