Why Magic Breakfast?

There is a pressing need for food and nutrition support for both children and adults within the UK

In the UK there are over 4 million children currently living in poverty (2023 data from The Department of Work and Pensions); to put it in context, that’s over four times the population of Birmingham’s metropolitan area. Ongoing research by The Food Foundation has found an increase of 10% in the number of households in which children face food insecurity (11.6% in January 2022 - 21.6% in January 2023).

According to Magic Breakfast’s 2022 school survey, of the schools currently partnered with the charity, an average of 204 pupils per school are receiving free breakfasts. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, that number was 102% lower.

So why is this important? Well, for children and developing brains, food insecurity is hugely detrimental. According to research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, receiving a free school breakfast was equivalent to an additional two months of educational progress per year for Key Stage 1 students, as well as an improvement in children’s attendance scores and behaviour.

Not only that, but insights from Magic Breakfast itself showed that the introduction of free breakfasts for children who otherwise would have gone without resulted in improvements in:

  • Concentration
  • Punctuality and attendance
  • Social skills
  • Educational attainment

What Magic Breakfast does:

The Magic Breakfast works with partnered schools to open doors early and provide free, nutritional breakfasts for students who are in need of food support. Partnered schools are often those with a greater-than-average number of disadvantaged children, and equal a total of over 200,000 children receiving a free, healthy start to the day in the UK.

You can also donate directly to the support the incredible efforts of Magic Breakfast. While £14 of your KitchenAid order will result in a free donation of 28p (one child fed), a direct donation of £14 from you could give 50 nutritious breakfasts.

Savoo will donate 2% of our organic revenue on every KitchenAid discount code or deal redeemed to Magic Breakfast from the 19th June to the 2nd July 2023. You can raise even more money for the charity by setting up a Savoo account and selecting Magic Breakfast as your chosen charity. You can then watch your free donations for the charity build-up every time you save money on your online shopping at Savoo.
