Support Make a Wish with Savoo
While for many Christmas is a time of joy, celebration and a break from normal everyday life, for children living with a critical illness, and the loved ones, what should be the happiest time of year can be spent in and out of hospitals, dealing with treatment and continued worry about the future. Make-A-Wish® UK is on a mission to ensure every child gets to experience the magic of childhood as it’s supposed to be: especially at Christmas.Sign up to support Make a Wish with Savoo

What will Make-A-Wish be doing in the lead-up to Christmas?
Just like the rest of the year, we at Make-A-Wish UK continue to grant wishes all year round. Sadly, due to the restrictions of the pandemic we experiened a 40% decline in our income and thousands of wishes had to be put on hold. We have also seen a heartbreaking increase in rush and priority wishes since we opened up referrals again, where a child has a prognosis of less than six or twelve months respectively.
We have found that wishes have great psychological and physical benefits for the whole family, making it important that work doesn’t cease in the lead-up to Christmas. In fact, donations are needed now more than ever in order to give children and their families much needed light and joy within the darkness that the diagnosis of a critical condition can bring.
Thousands of childrens’ Christmas day every year is spent as a patient rather than a child. More than any other time of year, it is important that treasured memories with family have the time and space to be created. And we know that the power of a wish extends beyond that moment of time, it creates magical memories that last a lifetime.
Currently we just don’t have the resouces to reach every single one of the over 60,000 children living in the UK with a critical condition so we have just launched our biggest every UK campaign to #LightUpTheDarkness for these childen, and their families when they need it most. We never want to be in the position where we have to say no to a child and their family, so it is vital we do all we can to achieve our vision of granting a wish for every eligible child.
What are some of the unique challenges that Make-A-Wish faces at Christmas time?
While waiting for their wishes to come true last year, some of Make-A-Wish’s children were treated with a special delivery on behalf of Make-A-Wish and partner Morrisons. 1,700 goody bags were distributed to children living with a critical illness over Christmas, while they were isolating due to the nature of their medical condition.
While the charitable spirit is great at Christmastime, so too is the desire to give children something to light up their Christmas among the everyday reality of living with a critical condition. Donations mean more than ever to the charity to keep morale high and enable their ongoing support for those children who are still able to experience their wishes in a safe way.
What does granting or sponsoring wishes mean to children and families at Christmas that is different from the rest of the year?
Throughout 2018, Make-A-Wish had support from around 900 volunteers, and over £300,000 worth of ‘gifts in kind’ (experiences and gifts given directly to Make-A-Wish instead of financial donations), which allowed more money to be spent on granting even more wishes.
This sort of support at Christmas is vital. Christmas is an especially difficult time for children with life-limiting illness, their siblings and their families. Make-A-Wish have found time and again across the world that granting wishes restores some of the childhood they have had to surrender to the treatment of their condition.
These gifts at Christmas - volunteer hours, donations and gifts in kind - help to ‘inspire children to believe that anything is possible’ and restore the magic of the season.
What are your goals and resolutions for New Year 2022?
Sadly the number of children who are eligible for a wish due to the diagnosis of a critical condition is only increasing.
Research carried out by the University of York for Make-A-Wish revealed that the number of children across the UK, with a condition eligible for Make-A-Wish UK support, doubled between 2014-2017 and estimates that this number will double again by 2030.
Jason Suckley, CEO, Make-A-Wish UK, said: “Wishes have the power to change lives and bring light to children and families at the most devastating of times. With more than 60,000 children across the country eligible for a wish, we desperately need donations now to make those wishes come true. The support of parters such as Savoo enables us to grant these powerful and essential wishes. It was heart-breaking when we had to shut referrals over lockdown and we never want to be in a position where we have to say no to a family and their child again. We urge everyone who can to get involved and help us achieve our vision of granting a wish for every eligible child."
