It goes without saying that keeping on top of your wellbeing is hugely important. And today, it’s become a top priority for many who want to treat their mind, body and spirit to a little downtime. In fact, 90% of Brits make sure to do some form of self care and spend an average of £53 a month to do so.

Arguably, the most in need of a well-deserved wellness escape are parents. Not only do many mums and dads have to do an eight-hour working day, but they then have to go home and do another eight before going to bed so they can do it all over again. It’s exhausting!

That’s why wellness travel is becoming more than just a trend – it’s a necessity for many. And it’s great that many are now looking to prioritise their mental and physical wellbeing. The only trouble is it can be tricky balancing that escape with the family responsibilities that will be there when they get home – and a lot of that comes down to cost.

That’s why I want to explore what affordable options parents have. I’ve taken a look at the top European cities for wellness breaks that don’t break the bank, so you can have a relaxing and rejuvenating time without the little ones in tow – and without the guilt that you’ve spent a fortune.

To do this, I've ranked the best European cities for a parent-only wellness escape on a budget. Using Europe's top city destinations (as listed in the World's Best Cities 'Europe's 100 Best cities' rankings), I searched sources like Budget Your Trip and Expedia to get the average hotel and flight costs for each city, along with the total number of adult-only hotels. I used Numbeo to gather data on the average price of a meal and also researched the total spas and nature and parks from TripAdvisor. This valuation was then used to form a score for each metric for every city. The top highest-scoring cities were then used in this campaign as the top cities for a wellness getaway.

The importance of self-care for parents

Parenting is one of the most rewarding experiences there is, but I'd be lying if I didn’t say that it also comes with its own challenges. Between managing daily tasks, caring for children and juggling work, many parents find themselves putting their own needs on the back burner. In this cycle of constant giving, parents often neglect their physical, mental and emotional health, which can lead to burnout, stress and anxiety – and this can have a lasting impact.

The demands of parenting can be overwhelming, but it’s crucial to recognise that self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. For parents, prioritising your wellbeing is key to maintaining balance. Physical self-care, such as exercise or rest, enhances energy levels and physical health. Mental and emotional self-care, such as mindfulness or therapy, helps manage stress and anxiety. When you take some downtime, you’re better equipped to handle the ups and downs of family life.

Dr Ravi Gill, Practitioner Psychologist at smartmindhealth understands the importance of parents looking after themselves, saying,

‘Taking time for self-care helps parents manage stress, reducing the risk of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. It helps to regulate our emotions; when parents are well-rested and emotionally balanced, they respond to challenges with greater patience and understanding. Each stage of parenting brings its own challenges. Self-care strengthens a parent’s ability to handle setbacks and stressful situations, making them more adaptable to life’s demands.’

Key considerations when choosing a wellness break

Wellness tourism is expected to grow at an annual rate of 16.6% through 2027, which shows just how important many see it as. But, a wellness getaway requires careful planning to ensure it offers the relaxation and rejuvenation needed without adding additional stress. There are various things you can think about so your break ticks all the necessary boxes.

1. Affordability

For many parents, the financial aspect of travel is a top priority. With family expenses already piling up, a budget-friendly wellness getaway can make all the difference. Affordable accommodation, reasonably priced flights and access to affordable local food make it possible to enjoy a refreshing escape without worrying too much about budget. Finding destinations where costs are low (without compromising on quality) ensures you can prioritise your wellbeing without overspending.

2. Natural environments

Being surrounded by nature can have a profound impact on mental health. Parks, beaches, wildlife areas and green spaces offer you the opportunity to unwind, take in some fresh air and embrace the calming power of nature. Studies show that spending time outdoors reduces stress and improves overall wellbeing. Cities or regions close to these natural environments are perfect for parents who want to relax.

Trainee Clinical Psychologist Molly Greenslade highlights the importance of gardening on our mental health in Savoo expert Matt Jones' article Cheap Budget Garden Ideas:

‘Gardening can be a useful tool for de-stressing... a 1983 theory suggests that spending time in nature has an immediate impact on our nervous system response leading to enhanced relaxation.’

3. Total number of adult-only hotels

Parents looking for an escape from their usual responsibilities may find solace in adult-only hotels. These accommodations are specifically designed to provide a quiet, peaceful atmosphere without the chaos that can come with family-friendly hotels. By choosing a destination with a higher number of adult-only hotels, you can have plenty of choice for spots where relaxation and rejuvenation are the priority.

4. Proximity to spas

Spa treatments like massages, facials and saunas have long been recognised for their ability to help you shut off from the world for a while. If you spend all week sitting at a desk, a relaxing back massage should do just the trick to get rid of those knots. If you’re on your feet all day, a foot massage should be just what the doctor ordered. These experiences are even proven to improve your mental health. When selecting a wellness destination, proximity to high-quality spas should be a key consideration. Whether it's a luxurious spa retreat or a spot that specialises in a specific treatment, having plenty to choose from should be high on your list of requirements when choosing your wellness escape.

The biggest cost to bear in mind with a trip to Istanbul are the flights, costing approximately £239 each for a return flight from the UK.

On top of the low cost of hotels and the abundance of spas, there are also plenty of other low-cost things to see and do around the city. Tips for planning your wellness city break

Planning a wellness getaway doesn’t have to be expensive. With the right strategies, parents can enjoy a rejuvenating break without stretching their budget too thinly. Here are some key tips to help you plan an affordable and stress-free wellness escape:

1. Use comparison tools for the best deals

Finding affordable flights and accommodations is crucial when planning a budget-friendly trip. Use travel comparison platforms like Expedia to track and compare prices on flights, hotels and packages. Setting up price alerts and booking in advance can also help secure the best deals, making your wellness escape more accessible.

2. Save money on travel expenses by using voucher codes

Before booking flights or spending money on travel necessities, check for voucher codes that can save you money. You can find loads of great deals that slash the price of travel with companies like EasyJet, Jet2 Holidays and TUI.

Then, when it’s time to stock up on essentials, voucher codes can save you money for everything else, too. You can use voucher codes at toiletry and wellbeing retailers like Boots and Superdrug; luggage at Antler; on eSIMS at Airalo; on currency at Post Office Travel Money; and with travel insurance providers like InsureandGo, AllClear and Wendy Wu Tours. This can lower the overall cost of your trip, so you can sink deeper into relaxation knowing you’ve saved even more money.

3. Look for discounts on spa treatments

A spa day can be one of the most relaxing parts of a wellness getaway, but treatments can add up quickly. To keep costs down, look for spa discounts, off-peak pricing and package deals at your destination city. Many spas offer midweek specials or early-bird promotions, allowing you to enjoy a massage or facial for a lot less.

4. Take advantage of free and low-cost wellness activities

Wellness isn’t just about physical relaxation, it’s also about simple, restorative experiences that allow the brain to wind down. If simply being away from the routine of your every day life wasn't enough, then spending time exercising or getting creative will be great for both body and mind.

Whether it's a calming experience with beautiful surroundings, or simply taking part in your favourite hobby, it's likely the city you're visiting has a bunch of free and low-cost activities that'll promote your mental and physical wellbeing:

  • Yoga
  • Reading in public parks and gardens
  • Swimming beaches and waterfronts
  • Hiking walking trails and nature reserves
  • Retail therapy
  • Art galleries
  • Device-less time

5. Plan your meals smartly

Healthy eating is a key part of any wellness trip, but dining out can be expensive. To save money while still enjoying nutritious meals, consider:

Shopping at local markets for fresh, affordable ingredients to prepare some meals yourself While market shopping, purchase snacks like fruit, nuts, cereal bars and the like to take out on day trips with you. That way you won’t get caught out in the upmarket bit of town with nothing but pricey dining options around! Choosing cafés with healthy, budget-friendly options over pricey restaurants Eat the local cuisine off the beaten path rather than at tourist traps Taking advantage of set menus or early-bird offers so you eat outside of the busiest times

6. Travel during off-peak seasons

Visiting a destination during off-peak months can significantly reduce travel costs. Flights, hotels and even spa treatments tend to be more affordable outside of peak tourist seasons such as the school holidays. This gives you more value for your money while also ensuring a quieter, more relaxing environment.

John Connellan
“Think like a local - eat local food - it’s usually the cheapest as well as the best! Use public transport instead of taxis and buy an eSim for your phone so you can use it as you would at home - Airalo is a great brand for this!"
