Our mission is to defeat meningitis. Meningitis is uniquely fast-acting and devastating. It can affect anyone of any age, but mainly affects otherwise healthy babies, young children and young adults. Striking quickly without warning, it can kill within hours and early warning signs are difficult to spot – symptoms can often be mistaken for something much less serious like flu.

We fund pioneering scientific research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis; raise awareness of the symptoms of meningitis and provide life-saving information to health professionals and the public; and provide practical and emotional support to the 3,200 families affected by meningitis each year in the UK.

Did you know...

For every 10 people who contract meningitis, 1 will die and 2 will be left with life-changing after-effects, such as limb amputations, brain damage, hearing and sight loss, or cerebral palsy. Few illnesses in 21st century Britain can cause such damage with such speed and without warning to otherwise healthy people.

What makes Meningitis Research UK different

Meningitis Research Foundation is the UK’s leading charity in meningitis research. Our vision is of a world free from meningitis.

  • A world where effective vaccinations can protect everyone.

  • A world where people who do get the disease get the most effective diagnosis and treatments possible.

  • A world where people affected and their families have the best support and information.

Since our establishment in 1989, we have played an instrumental role in helping to reduce death and disability from meningitis wherever it exists – and our international impact is growing year-on-year. We currently have five research projects in Africa where the need is greatest, to help improve primary healthcare and reduce the high levels of child mortality from preventable diseases, such as meningitis.
