PKD was formed in 2000 by a PKD patient and a genetics consultant. About 70,000 adults and children in the UK may have Polycystic Kidney Disease or PKD - life-threatening inherited conditions that can cause renal (kidney) failure and affect other organs in the body. PKD Charity gives practical and emotional support and advice to patients and their families from the moment they’re diagnosed, through treatment and beyond - on the phone, online and face-to-face. They also fund innovative research dedicated to improving understanding of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) which will lead to the development of new treatments to slow or prevent PKD progression, reduce pain, better manage other symptoms and improve quality of life.

Last year, PKD Charity and Kidney Research UK teamed up to fund three research projects to improve the lives of PKD patients, with grants worth a total of £537,000. The awards mark the start of a new collaborative approach to funding by the charities, in order that research benefits patients faster.

Did you know...

  • PKD has been in existence with humanity - with the most detailed recorded case dating back to 1586 - but awareness, and therefore understanding of the disease, is still far too low.

  • About 70,000 adults and children in the UK may have Polycystic Kidney Disease or PKD - life-threatening inherited conditions that can cause renal (kidney) failure and affect other organs in the body.

  • PKD kidneys can grow to the size of a rugby ball.

  • PKD Charity currently supports an active community of 5,000 PKD patients and families.

How your donations can help:

  • £10 could help to fund the support services PKD Charity offers to patients and families who are living with PKD. The practical and emotional support, advice and information is available to everyone affected by polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a vital service that helps them to get the information and support they need to help them live the best life they can.

  • £50 could help to fund a PKD Information and Support Day. Information days are free to attend and are for anyone affected by PKD. They are an opportunity to hear from and talk with doctors and other experts and meet with other people, providing valuable peer to peer support.

  • £100 could help fund research that will increase understanding of polycystic kidney disease and help improve the management and treatment of everyone affected by PKD.

How you can support the charity

PKD Charity supporters can show their support in a number of ways, through donating a one off or regular gift, leaving a gift in their will, taking part in an event or challenge, organising a fundraising event at their work or school. Our supporters could also nominate us as their employer’s charity of the year.

PKD Charity supporters can volunteer with us by helping to organise and run a local PKD Support Group in their area.
