Winston's Wish

Winston’s Wish is the charity for bereaved children. We support children, young people and their families after the death of a parent or sibling.

The death of a parent or sibling is one of the most fundamental losses a child will ever face. At Winston’s Wish, we believe that bereaved children need support to make sense of death and rebuild their lives.

Winston’s Wish provides professional therapeutic help in individual and group settings, via our Freephone National Helpline, online support and publications. Our professionally qualified clinical practitioners provide bereaved children and their families with a range of support services.

Did you know...

Every day more than 100 children in the UK experience the death of a parent. Without the right support, grieving children experience profound difficulties that can impact their childhood and continue into adult life. Studies show bereaved children have increased risk of mental health problems, underachievement, misuse of alcohol/drugs and youth offending. Approximately 309,000 school-age children across the UK have experienced the death of a parent or sibling and research suggests that a large percentage of them are without any kind of professional help.

What makes Winston's Wish different

Winston’s Wish:

  • offers the widest range of practical support and guidance to bereaved children, their families and professionals via therapeutic help in individual, group and residential settings, a Freephone National Helpline, online support, publications and training.

  • has built a wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding of the impact of bereavement at a young age and has developed services to best support a grieving child’s needs.

  • is the only specialist provider of support for children bereaved through murder or manslaughter, suicide or military families who have experienced a death.

  • depends almost entirely on voluntary donations for its income, needing over £2.5 million each year to continue its support for bereaved children.

Other ways to support

There are lots of ways to get involved with Winston’s Wish; some supporters like to volunteer at our day groups for our children and parents or in one of our offices. The more active supporters get involved in events or join our cheering squads. We have a team of Young Ambassadors (aged 13- 24) who support us by attending events, giving talks and spreading the word across the country about the work that we do with bereaved children, young people and their families. There is also opportunity to support us on social media -raising awareness of our campaigns and achievements.
