Wellbeing of Women

Founded 54 years ago, Wellbeing of Women is the only charity finding cures and treatments across the breadth of female reproductive health: pregnancy and childbirth, fertility and IVF, gynaecological cancers, and overlooked areas like endometriosis, PCOS and the menopause. With only 2.48% of publicly funded research devoted to this area, our work is vital. Nearly every routine treatment we take for granted today has come about thanks to our work.

Did you know...

Here are some reasons why our work matters:

  • Every day 21 women die from gynaecological cancer

  • Every day 15 babies will die at or around the time of birth

  • 60,000 babies are born prematurely each year

  • 1 in 7 couples have difficulties conceiving

  • 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the UK suffer from endometriosis

What makes Wellbeing of Women different

Here are some of our key achievements over the last 54 years:

  • The importance of taking folic acid for the healthy development of the unborn baby

  • Use of ultrasound in pregnancy to help diagnose conditions such as Down’s syndrome

  • Development of cooling as an innovative treatment for newborns at risk of brain damage

  • Identifying the link between the HPV virus and cervical cancer. Today, all school girls are immunised against HPV

  • The pioneering use of CyberKnife® technology - targeted radiotherapy - to treat gynaecological cancers

  • The discovery of two new treatments for womb cancer

  • The development of safe and effective use of lasers for cervical cancer

  • The use of BOTOX® to treat Overactive Bladder Syndrome (incontinence)

  • The establishment of the first fetal medicine centre in the UK at King’s College, London, under the directorship of world class authority, Professor Kypros Nicolaides
